Significant Events

Significant Events

The idea that significant events can change an individual’s perspective is true, for I believe that once it has happened it wouldn’t be the same as before. There are many cases in the novels I have read that the main character is changed by an event. Usually in novels the significant changes are for the better as in the novel “Finding Forrester”. This book is about Jamal, a black teenage kid from the Bronx that runs into the path of an amazing author. This interaction triggers a significant event for both Wallace and Forrester. Ever since they have met, it has inspired Jamal’s new life goal, for now he is supported in making positive academic achievements. Instead of hiding his true identity from his peers he now shows off his brilliance. Because of the new perspective in his mind, Jamal has changed from being a kid that had to hide his intelligence. He is now a kid in a new school for people who can show off how intellectual they are. Both the event of meeting Mr. Forrester and the change in schools have made a huge impact on Jamal’s life. These significant events have definitely changed the perspective of Jamal Wallace and now it’s a better learning environment for him to live in.

Although most significant events in stories end up making a positive impact to make the audience interested but, there are some who are less fortunate. In the text of the ‘Whip Hand’ it talks about Sid Halley, who was a world champion race jockey. Sid has suffered from a significant crash that crushed his left hand, thus ruining his riding career forever. This event has changed his perspective for now he cannot race, which is really devastating and had a massive effect on his perspective. The intensity of the crash made him severely injured and unable to race again in his lifetime.

Ever since birth there has been significant events in which it had to have changed an individual’s perspective. You may not realize that an event has changed you but I believe it has for every cause there is an effect. Each significant event in a person’s life takes time to make an impact. Just like friendship throughout the years of a kids childhood, it either strengthens or vanishes.

Life filled with Sorrows

Sitting by the hospital bed, I could hear the heart monitor beep its way through. The medical ventilators were doing their jobs peacefully. The first bag was filled with blood and the  second, with more. He gently moved his hand and let out a soft moan. I could almost feel his pain.

“Mom can I buy ice cream from the dairy truck?”

“No honey, not today. You already had some yesterday.”

“Please mom. Please!”

“No.”

(walking backwards towards the road) “Fine, I am going to buy it myself with the allowance grandma gave me.”

“No Zack, it doesn’t matter whose money it is. I do- LOOK OUT!’

Sirens.

“Breaking News, witnesses and sources have confirmed that six-year-old Zack Montgomery has been hit by a car at the first intersection by Castle Hill Shopping Center. Witnesses say, this happened around 2 pm and help arrived immediately. Our best wishes are with the boy and his family. Another robbery occur-”

If I had just allowed him ice cream, this wouldn’t have happened. I am a single mom paying child support, maintaining two jobs and taking suicidal pills after loosing my four-year-old daughter, Kendra, all at the age of 32. I married young; He was 25 and I was 23. We promised, till death do us apart. I had little Zack then quiet Kendra. One day when we woke up, she was missing. Her window was open and her doll under her blanket. Soon enough the kidnapper was caught, but my daughter wasn’t spared. He killed her.

A few months passed and my husband and I filed for divorce. He wouldn’t talk nor would I. He wouldn’t eat or sleep for too long, nor would I. There was space between us; we realized we were pushing away Zack. He was shattered himself; his grades decreased dramatically. After the divorce, I became suicidal and depressed but I had to stay strong for my son. Our son my husband didn’t think about anymore. He left the city and moved on with his life. He is married and has two daughters. Once a month he writes to us when he sends the cheque. He says he loves us dearly and never misses Zack’s birthday. It hurts every time I read his letter. I informed him about Zack’s accident but he never came down to see him. He says there is a lot of pain in this city for him to handle and he cannot leave his job and family. It hurt when he said that.

Sitting there in the quiet, I could hear Zacks’ heart pump as much blood as it could. He was soft and still. I could almost feel his pain. If only the abracadabra stuff was real then I would have released my baby from this pain. With nearly every bone shattered in his body, he is fighting. Doctors say he will be alright, but after everything that happened, what is alright?

If I am alive today, it’s only because of Kendra. My own little daughter is now my own guardian angel.

Demons Awaiting

They told me about the danger

That this world is cruel

They said you have to stay alert

That there is corruption everywhere

Always getting influenced by others

That is not what they taught me

But I wanted to take a little risk

I didn’t know what would stop me

And now i’m gone

If i keep going down this path i wont live

Even though i’m breathing, I’m dead within

Now that I’ve been taken away by the evil

I know they won’t let me go back

I may have to live my life with this regret

And when I look at these young children

All I see is their innocence, soon to be lost to

The demon that is awaiting

How Macbeth Killed 22 People

263- 872b, digital composite of 4 images

On May 10,1849; 22 people were killed by state militia troops just outside of the Astor Place Opera House. The riot was the cause of a great rivalry between two Shakespearean actors, one of them being; Englishmen, William Charles Macready and the other being; American, Edwin Forrest. This rivalry started during one of Macready’s tours through England in the 1830’s. Edwin Forrest attended one of Macready’s performances and hissed at Macready while he was on stage. This was considered to be very rude at the time so a big scandal was made of it. In the end Macready ended up forgetting about it; however, the rivalry continued on throughout both of these actors’ lives.

Since Shakespeare was so popular during this time his work influenced a lot of people’s opinions on politics and life in general. For this reason the rivalry between Macready and Forrest influenced their fans. Macready was considered to represent the upper middle class and high class people of the time while Forrest represented the average working class American people. It was the hatred between these two classes that the Astor Place Riot occurred.

On May 7, 1849 Macready, (who was on his last tour in America because he was going to retire from acting) was set to perform a world famous play entitled: Macbeth, by William Shakespeare. The performance was scheduled to take place in the greatest opera house in New York; the Astor Place Opera House, little did Macready know; over twenty working class citizens had purchased tickets for his show later that night. Fast forward to the beginning of Macready’s performance of Macbeth; as Macready is walking out on stage the Edwin Forrest supporters started slowly and steadily stomping on the ground. Of course the action of stomping on the ground creates a low rumbling sound so that Macready had a hard time performing his soliloquy. But Macready still decided to keep performing over top of the noise. This made the people mad so they started hissing and booing him, making it very hard to continue on through his performance. Towards the end of the performance the people started throwing food and drinks at Macready so he decided not to finish the performance and walked off stage where he escaped through a back door to get away from the theatre. He later said that he would not continue his tour throughout America and immediately return to his home in England never to return to America. Soon after the announcement a petition was signed by 47 people that convinced Macready to try and perform Macbeth once again. People started putting up posters advertising Macready’s performance this was soon followed by other people putting up posters advertising Forrest’s performance of the play: “Gladiator,” at a theatre across town from the Astor Place Opera House.

When it came time for the Opera House to open police had already shown up expecting that something was going to happen.  The police only allowed ticket holders inside so there would be no trouble. After everyone had gone inside, had taken their seats and the show was about to begin, they shut the doors, barricaded them and also barricaded the windows. After the show began a crowd of around 10,000 to 15,000 people had formed outside of the Opera House. Almost immediately the crowd became restless and started getting violent by throwing stones at the Opera House and knocking down street lights. When the police got worried about an attack on Macready himself they started arresting a few of the crowd members as a warning to the other rioters. But instead of calming the crowd down they are incited even further and they became even more violent. Meanwhile in the Opera House; Macready decides to leave the stage and leave his performance incomplete. He supposedly sneaks out a back entry way disguised as a police officer on horseback. The rioters eventually got so angry and so violent the commanding officer of police gives the order to fire blank rounds over the crowds head hoping to scare them off.  But because the crowd realizes the rounds are only blanks things just become even more out of control. Eventually the crowd got so bad the order was given to fire at rioters point blank. Even though the officers did carry out the orders, they did so unwillingly and shot at them low so they would only injure and not kill. Once the dust had settled casualties were reported at; 22 and over 100 more were injured, including officers hit by stones. There was still some bad blood however and protests started the day after the massacre which included bonfires and still more riots broke out, but none as severe as the Astor Place riot.

Macready decided not to continue his tour through America but instead got back to England as soon as possible so he could finish his last tour there. He retired his role of Macbeth in 1851 and then died 22 years later. This quote from William Shakespeare sums up the end of Macready’s life quite well: “And this, our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything.”

Forrest however had his reputation tarnished by this whole event and ended up filing for a divorce against his wife. He spent his last days in his mansion where he died only a couple of months before Macready.  The gloomy end to Forrest’s life reminds me of Macbeth, ironically the great Shakespearean play that his rival performed so well.

Great Action

Self exiled, renowned author William Forrester lives a life of solitude and insignificance until he meets Jamal Wallace: a Bronx ridden, self disclosed, closet academic that reinvigorates his beliefs. Initially, in  Finding Forrester  Jamal Wallace appears to be fortunate when he meets the established writer William Forester; however, he reciprocates the influencing values that appeared to make him so fortunate, which can be clearly identified by the great actions of Jamal Wallace. In witch the great actions are the onset where our beliefs are influenced in a positive format. Because of assumption, enlightenment, and courage, William Forester’s stagnant beliefs progress into a way of life worth living. The general argument made by Gus Van Sant, in his work Finding Forrester, is that our convicted beliefs can only be reinvigorated and refreshed through the great actions of the ones around us. More specifically, Gus Van Sant argues that stereo types create barriers within a relationship. However, breaking society’s convention of typical stereo types creates an unbreakable relationship, where the display of courage forms a catalyst of an epiphany about our beliefs. In other words, our beliefs are stagnant until a catalyst of great action is set before our eyes; thus, changing our beliefs by embracing a new life.

Many individuals’ beliefs are shaped revolving around the stereotypes that exist among them; therefore, it takes the actions of the ones prejudiced to liberate the beliefs of the beholder. For instance, upon the first eye to eye interaction between the two men Jamal hopes to see if he will take a look at more of his writing, but in return received a scolding and a door in the face along with a rhetorical challenge to complete a 5000 word essay. The actions displayed by Forrester during the first eye to eye interaction were all reminiscent of the stereo types of an African American teenage boy. Suggesting that he is incapable of high level of academics and aspirations can only withhold the life on the streets. Forrester’s Interpretation of Jamal inhibits the relationship of the two men, but Forrester’s miscellaneous challenge of the 5000 word essay creates a gateway for Jamal to surpass the barrier placed upon the relationship of Forrester and Jamal. This challenge is thecommencement where Jamal will continually revitalize Forrester’s beliefs by his great actions. On the other hand, Jamal reciprocates stereo types on Forrester creating a barrier on both sides. In view of these barriers, the actions of both Jamal and Forrester will be needed to chisel down each other’s barriers; ergo, liberating their beliefs of narrowness and presenting a refreshed belief. Riddled with rumors about the man in the window, Jamal has subconsciously accepted stereo types about Forrester presuming he is an axe murderer or even maybe a ghost. Forrester will have to break this stereotype through the knowledge he holds as the great American novelist. But in beginning of this relationship, Jamal is the one with everything to gain and everything to lose while Forrester seems impassive in the matter; thus, making it even harder on Jamal to pursue the relationship. With this in mind it seems that Jamal will be forced to break the barriers that both he and Forrester hold.  Therefore, Jamal’s actions will only be allowed to take a permanent effect in refreshing Forester’s beliefs when the barriers are broken.

Despite the parallelism of Jamal’s and Forrester’s stereotyped interpretation upon meeting each other, an unbreakable bond is created. But, for this particular bond to be formed the past actions of a soon to be mentor will have to be discovered to reach an epiphany, creating the unbreakable bond.  Although recognizing Forester’s knowledge of literature, and with little actual knowledge of the man, Jamal sees him as an introvert. With the unknown story of Forester’s past, Jamal is left to assume the stereotypes about the man that he has picked up from the street. Jamal learns later from his ignorant teacher about Forester’s connection to literature; thus, breaking the stereo type Jamal has placed on Forrester. The knowledge of his new friend being the great American novelist gives Jamal the confidence that Forrester can help him to academia. As Jamal spends more time with Forrester, it strengthens their relationship, ultimately becoming closer to each other. The great American novel displays the writing brilliance of William Forrester, and with William Forrester in his presence, Jamal’s believes that he too can emulate Forester’s work and become a great writer. From another perspective, we see the stereo types Forester has placed on Jamal dissipate due to Jamal’s actions; thus, refreshing Forester’s beliefs on his own life. Forrester first saw Jamal as a punk on the street that would probably amount to nothing; however, this was disproven extremely quickly. As their relationship develops Jamal starts to grow apart from his friends, putting what mattered to him first; writing. Despite society’s expectation of Jamal being the basketball man, Jamal wishes to be seen as academic; therefore Jamal misses two free throws in the championship game. Jamal does not miss these shots by lack of ability, but misses with the intentions to showcase that all his strengths are not represented on a court. From these actions Forrester witnesses Jamal’s true aspirations for life, which in return sparks a progressing enlightenment in Forrester where he questions his own life and what his aspirations are for his final years. The enlightenment of Jamal and Forrester forecast the impact they have on each other’s life, enviably bringing them closer.

Sometimes a change in beliefs needs to be caused by more than just the simple actions of another. Sometimes it needs the indisputable courage of one, to truly change the beliefs of another. The cynicism of Jamal’s teacher towards Jamal’s ability as a writer has been brought up throughout the film, and when the school writing contest approaches, Jamal wants to ensure that his work is masterful to prove his ability as a writer. Jamal has complete confidence that his writing in Forrester’s apartment will exhibit Jamal’s ability as a writer. He breaks one of Forrester’s rules by taking one of his pieces from Foresters apartment. The courage Jamal displays in his actions tell that Jamal is willing to risk the relationship of the man that has brought him to a level of academic brilliance; therefore, illustrating that he is willing to risk it all. The courage indicates Jamal’s true dedication to writing, and it sparks another epiphany in Forrester giving him the ability to break his beliefs of leaving his apartment. As a result of Jamal’s plan backfiring, Forrester is forced out of his apartment to save the credibility of Jamal. As a guest of honor, Forrester is given the opportunity to present a piece of writing. Forrester presumes credit for the words, but at the end of writing he announces that the words belonged to Jamal and because of that, he receives applause from the audience. Forrester’s courage shown through overcoming the constraints he placed on himself to give credibility to Jamal, gives Jamal the realization that he too is capable of writing as great as Forester’s. As Forrester and Jamal both break from their original stereo types and constraints, they make the full transformation of beliefs.

Gus Van Sant uses the metamorphosis of Forrester’s and Jamal’s beliefs to demonstrate that one’s convicted beliefs can be transformed; however, one cannot do this alone, it takes the great actions of others to complete this transformation. Immediately upon meeting Jamal face to face, Forrester shuns him with a rhetorical challenge of a 5000 word essay.  But, Jamal proves Forester wrong by completing the essay; thus, breaking the first barrier Forrester has placed on the relationship, granting Jamal passage into Forrester’s world. As a result of Jamal’s actions and through the medium of literature, Forester and Jamal see each other without the stereo types originally placed on each other, thus allowing Jamal and Forester to truly see the meaning of the actions of one another, and allowing them to refresh their stagnant beliefs. In conclusion, the transformation of Forrester’s beliefs are evoked by Jamal’s courage; thus pushing Forrester into an epiphany rejuvenating his beliefs. Through Finding Forrester Gus Van Sant’s exemplifies, themetamorphosis of beliefs is only possible through the great actions of those around us.

The Change Of Our Ways

One accident just one, it may be a good one or a bad one, but just one slight change could impact one’s life forever. I can relate to this, so can Sid Halley, William Forrester and Jamal Wallace. In the excerpt Whip Hand by Dick Francis, Sid Halley is a world champion race jockey, since getting into a horrific accident his lifestyle has to take a huge leap of difference. William Forrester and Jamal Wallace both have experience a good accident in the novel Finding Forrester by Gus Van Sant when they begin to embark on their rollercoaster ride of a friendship. After a couple of years playing soccer I had to face with a misfortune that has altered my future. Sid, William, Jamal and I all have come to terms to what our days will be like since the events that has affected us.

Sid Halley was dreaming, dreaming that he was riding in a race and in that race he has won first place but as he is waking up he realizes that his room was dead silent that there was no one cheering for him since in his mind he had won the championship. Then he awakes for the second time as though he was dreaming that he was awake, this time understanding that he would never be able to ride ever again. Sid has recently crushed his left hand from when he crashed at the Belmont Stakes. What could a man do when his dream was thrown into the garbage? Well Halley got up and got dress and decided to not waste a day. This injury altered Sid’s perspective on life tremendously because Sid all his life has known that his passion was to ride and not just to ride to win. In other words, from now on Sid does not see his life as a race and winning, he sees it was a way to get through his crushed dream as is hand. Whip Hand is a story to illustrate to us that we must move forward with our lives even when it throw us a curve ball that hits the back fence, Dick Francis demonstrates this to us through the use of the main character’s injury causing them to get their dreams broken.

Jamal Wallace and William Forrester could not have met at a better time, both were suffering with situations that they could not gone through by themselves but from the help of each other Jamal and William end up satisfied with the end results. Jamal is a gifted writer but is too shy to share with the rest of the world his talent. William is also an amazing writer, he writes a timeless novel called Avalon Landing but has been hiding from the world since then because he believes that everybody is not to be trusted. Since going to a new and prestigious school Jamal has been judge because of his background from one of his teachers, Robert Crawford. There is a writing competition happening at Jamal’s school and he decides to enter in it but with a piece he took from Forrester’s place when he specifically promised that whatever he writes in that room stays in the room. Reading this story that Jamal has sent in, Crawford accuses Jamal of plagiarism. The only way for Jamal to get redemption is if William comes out and admits that he gave Jamal one of his pieces to get inspiration from. In the end Forrester breaks out of his shell and tells the truth. Forrester does not just come out of his shell out of the blue, he only does after Jamal has gained his trust and brought William out into the world to show him that there is nothing to be scared of. In other words Jamal and William’s perspective has been impacted by each other because if their friendship that they has developed and the trust and loyalty shared.

It was last year during the month of May, it was the beginning of the soccer season and I was excited. Excited for a new season, excited that it was outdoor. It was the first game to kick of the year, not even a regular season game it was just a exhibition game.  The first half was great, we were leading. It was half way through the first half, the other team had the ball they were running down the field towards our net of course what do I do I try to defend. I go after the girl then all of a sudden I feel a weird twist and pop in my left knee and I go down. The pain was how else can I say but was painful, I was rushed off the field and put on the bench. My mom since being our “sports doctor” assesses out my knee to see if it will be okay. After a couple stretches and light running back and forth on it I decided that I wanted to go back out, so I do. Then I got subbed off because it does not feel right, after a couple more stretches and light runs I make the choice and want to go back out and try it again.

They say that third time is the charm, but this time it was the total opposite. I get back on the field, my team is in current possession of the ball we are so close to their net, yet we cannot seem to get the ball to the back of the net. All of a sudden as I had the ball, I go down again this time the pain got magnified to what it seems like giving birth would be less painful. As I went down I clutch my knee in pain and the water works were beginning to rush down my hot, red, and sweating face. Both my mom and the other assistant coach comes onto the field again to help me, the first time I was able to get up and somewhat hobblethis third time I was unable to get up. Therefore the assistant coach had to carry me off of the thick grass. When I got to the bench my coach told me, “Okay, you are done for the rest of the game.” Saddened my this news, I nod my head in agreement. Some weeks have passed then I get an appointment at the UofC for the knee clinic, the results I got from visiting them was that I had torn my ACL and possibly my lateral meniscus or the cartilage. I had come to my consensus that I would not be able to play soccer for the rest of the season and possibly for the next couple years of my life. From then on I had to change my ways, no more sports or anything that I was at high risk for reinjuring myself. This even has impacted me because I am unable to play soccer anymore or doing anything athletically intense.

In conclusion, Sid and I have learned to live our lives in a different way due from a disastrous injury that has impacted us both. Sid getting his left hand crushed and I tearing my ACL and lateral meniscus. William Forrester and Jamal Wallace have learn to open up their lives to others in a way where they do not have to hide themselves. All of these characters including myself we have all been affected from events in out lives that have changed out lives no matter if it was for the better or for the worst.

Blog 3 Redone- Connor.S

I remember a time where I had to walk five miles for fresh water, a time where poverty surrounded me, and my family. Sickness enveloped my town, creating a toxic cloud of inevitable disease. This is what I called home, this is what I woke up to every morning; Ethiopia. My daily commute would be getting up early in the morning, then walk five miles to the well and back, carrying 10 pounds of dirt water on my head, with my feet grinding on the harsh terrain, creating blisters daily. When I received word that sponsors have started donating to me and my family, I had the chance to go to Mumbai, India. Thrilled, I took my only clothes; the ones I had on, and was on my way.

Upon arrival the atmosphere was a complete contrast to my home town. Instantly I could feel the clean air inhaled, cleanse my infected, weak, lungs. The places people lived in, where unlike anything I have ever seen, structural beasts that could withstand a hurricane, and there were these mechanical boxes, which moved when someone got in them, I later discovered that they were called cars. The parallelism between Mumbai and Ethiopia, were confusing, how could people live like this, consciously knowing that me and my family, with many others, are struggling every day to just get fresh water. Is this what the world has come to, greed and ignorance, unable to see past their wallets, and help provide for families who are not so lucky? The main determining fact, that could provide you with a better lifestyle and healthier one, could simply be the place you were born in.

Exploring this magnificent and diverse city, I came across a vast opening, with big slides and water coming out of them, then joining the plethora of water at the bottom, where people ran and dove into. Confusion swept over me, the strength in my legs deteriorated and I crumbled to my knees. With tears forming at the corner of my eyes, anger started revealing itself, what a waste of water, when it could be used to help people get by. Then I realized that these people don’t care about the conditions that I live in, why should they, there perfectly fine on their own. Ignorance was a dominant trait, unaware and blind to the harsh reality of the environment next door.

The majority of people don’t care what is happening to the citizens of a struggling country, but there are a handful of ones, who would do anything to give me and my family another day. Those people are what keep me living every day; the strength they give me is indescribable. I keep living to get them self-gratification for the help they have provided me, unfortunately, poverty is still effecting, millions of citizens around the world.

Throughout my life, I have seen what true passion and character is, and I am thankful for everything that the kind people have done for me. Carrying on this same concept for future generation is my goal before I go, promoting a fair and equal life for all. Even though it’s almost a hopeless cause, I feel like it’s my duty to do everything in my power to help those in needs, just like how I was saved.

critical

Even with all the international organizations based on humanitarianism working to provide people in need around the world with the necessities of life, there are still communities in all parts of the world who go through great hardship to come up with these basic needs. While these communities suffer and put up with their hardships, other parts of the world have it easy with everything they will ever need at their fingertips. In the provided photographs, this disparity is proven by the recreational water park in Mumbai, India and the hand dug well to find water in Ethiopia. The inequality in the quality of life shown in this prompt shows just how good and how bad some people have it.

The water park in Mumbai displays a sum of people both splashing around and relaxing having a good time cooling off in the hot summer sun. Given the design of the water park, it was not cheap to build and is not cheap to run; not only does this community have money to through away for public recreation, they have an abundance of water to use, throw away, and use at their leisure. The children in this photograph are all enjoying themselves and not one of them looks to be deprived of any necessity life along with many of the wants available to them, including potable water at the turn of a tap. There is a father laying down and relaxing watching his kids in the water with his shades on; he does not have to and does not worry about how he’s going to come up with basic needs for his family for he lives in a place lucky enough where everything they will need is readily available.

The photograph taken in Ethiopia shows a person struggling to get water from hand dug well which is but a few feet deep in the dry, hard-packed ground. Their two containers are rather small and are made of what looks like the scavenged shell off the fruit of plant; not only is there little water in them, the water is extremely murky to the point its brown. The person in the photograph is awfully scrawny and has to work hard to come up with the basic needs of life to survive and help provide for their family. They must be very careful in how they deal and use their water supply, many people live off this well and walk a great distance everyday for just a taste of water.

The displayed photographs exemplify the disparity around the world; some people have everything they could think of at the tips of their fingers while others go through great hardship to survive and come up with enough water to last the day. Perhaps international organizations and charities should get more support from those thriving to help do a better job to provide people with the basic necessities of life and raise the quality of life around the world.

DESSERTS!

Pie; I love pie. There are many kinds of pie. Apple pie, Blueberry Pie, Banana Cream Pie and Chicken Pot Pie! But my favorite pie is Pumpkin Pie. This pie is very seasonal; from October to January. Soft and cool at room temperature, with a tablespoon of whip cream makes your gloomy day just a little bit better.

Before the pie can be cut into a perfect triangle ready for a bite, it goes through a long process so that consumers, like me, can be satisfied. According to WikiHow, there are 12 ways in which you can enjoy a homemade pumpkin pie; however, according to a sixteen year-old named Sadaf, there are only 5 steps:

Step one- grab you credit card.

Step two- get into your car.

Step three- drive to your nearest superstore(you don’t want to prolong your cravings).

Step four- buy the pumpkin pie and whip cream.

Step five- cut a perfect slice with the foamy swirl sitting perfectly on the top of the pie.

Just small things like indulging into my favorite kind of pie brightens up my day a little bit more, but it isn’t the only dessert that performs this task.

Back in Toronto, Ontario, my aunt would make little cup size cheesecakes with fresh strawberries in the middle and a sweet, harmonious strawberry drizzle on top. It was a dream come true; Just describing the good old days is making me salivate! Recently, I had seen an episode of Food Factory on the Food Network channel, where they had demonstrated how cheesecakes were made by a certain company. There was the normal base and ingredients, but the specialization turned the ordinary cheesecake into my new valentine. There it was-the ultimate chocolate brownie cheesecake. The brownie sat perfectly on the top with caramel and fudge sauce drizzled all over it and chocolate shavings covering the center. How I wished it was in my fridge right now!

My final favorite dessert that I absolutely enjoy is cream puffs. They are easy to eat and great for any occasion. Preparation time: thaw for fifteen minutes. The ones from Costco, in my opinion, are the best! For my sixteenth birthday, instead of a cake I wanted a tower of cream puffs, but due to the high number of guests, I bought a red velvet cake instead. On big holidays such as Christmas, New years and Thanksgiving, I buy cream puffs so that all the kids, and myself, can enjoy them. Because no utensils are required, it just makes this treat even better.

Without desserts, eating dinner wouldn’t be fun- because desserts always come after dinner, but who said it cannot be first?

Wild Winds

sailing ship

It was the warm summer of 1796 and my dreams of sailing the mighty British vessel was at its height. I long waited to join the British navy just for the sole purpose of exploring the mighty seas that I heard so much about. As a 17 year old peasant boy, it wasn’t easy enrolling in the navy but after a long wait I was informed to join a vessel that was to approach the harbour in a week or so. This was the longest week in my life but as the days rolled by the rumors of this vessel barged in. This so called vessel was to protect the trade route from England to Jamaica from the ruthless pirates, I guess they were unsuccessful. A dozen ships were destroyed and hundreds were slaughtered by the blades of these pirates. I heard of these pirates; they were simply devils in human forms. “Plunder, take and kill” was their motto. Nevertheless I wasn’t intimidated, my morale was high and I was ready for anything.

I finally spotted the vessel and I dashed towards the harbour but what I saw was horrific: decks filled with blood and body parts, the men were covered the scars and some missing arms and the other legs. I was petrified, I could not hold another sight of this massacre, maybe I wasn’t cut out for such a job. My mind wished to retreat but my heart screamed “ONWARDS!”. It took another week for them to recruit new men and repair these ships and proudly enough I was one of these new recruits. However I was given the job of mopping the lower deck, away from all the excitement. I at least imagined I would get to fire a cannon but that was far beyond my status. The mighty British vessel finally left the harbour to protect the trade route.

Months rolled by and we didn’t spot any pirates, I was simply blessed and to top it all off we were informed of a higher pay once we completed our 5 months guarding this route. I was tired of this job but money was my only motivation from this point on. I was prohibited to stay on the top deck for more than a minute, the men were awfully vulgar to me but I guess that was the life of a peasant. However when the sun set, I was able to sneak to the top and watch the waves clash to the sides of our ship. The wild winds would clash against my face and before you knew it I was in love with the sea.

One morning I heard the sounds of canon roaring on the top deck, we were in a gruesome battle. Canon balls were raging on opposite ends, destroying every little object in their site, including men. The men handed me a sword and the captain yelled “Defensive Positions”. The pirates made their way across to our ship by ropes, what followed next was severe bloodshed. This was no place for a boy like me, I threw away the sword and jumped off the ship. I swam my way to freedom and away from the horrifying acts on the boat.

Maybe one day I would have the courage to face pirates but not today.

I was a coward.
