A River Runs Through it & Attack on Titan Literary Exploration

A belief is described as the ideal that individuals follow as true and can change accordingly by the circumstances that others create with their actions. In the movie, A River Runs Through It, Norman reevaluates his respect for Paul after he saves Norman’s relation with Jessie when he intervenes with her before she leaves. As well as in Attack on Titan, Eren’s beliefs were drastically altered after that faithful day when his mother offers her life to the Titan for the survival of him and Misaka. When hardship arises, the choice of action that others take in response can shift an individual’s beliefs in a positive direction. This is evident through Robert Redford’s film, A River Runs Through it, by examining the character of Norman after Paul helps him with reconnecting with Jessie, as well as Tetsurō Araki’s anime, Attack on Titan, by examining the protagonist Eren after his mother decides to sacrifice herself to the Titan to save Eren and Misaka from further harm.

The choices that others make can influence a positive shift in an individual’s beliefs, like how Paul influences Jessie to reconcile with Norman which sways Norman’s views about Paul. This took place after the scene where Jessie takes the train tracks back to his residents as a punishment for Norman returning Neal, undressed and drunk, to her. At that point, it seems that Norman was about end his first relationship in a bittersweet manner until Paul intercepts Jessie with his car. He uses his charm and words to sway Jessie into assuaging with Norman as a way to give a second chance for their relation to continue and flourish. Originally, Norman was starting to believe that Paul was become more and more out of control with all of the problems that he accumulated over the time that he wasn’t there to keep him out of trouble. Norman also acknowledges Paul’s actions and respects him more not just as an artist of a unique style of fly-fishing, but for what he did for him than what he did at Lolo’s during the time that he was away. This indicates how nowadays, people are quick to judge others by appearance and their “mask” of an attitude that usually creates the stereotypes that others believe in by how they are depicted in the media. These stereotypical beliefs can be broken in the right way by the actions of the ones who are marginalized by society.

Besides Norman’s beliefs about Paul being shifted, in Attack on Titan, Eren experiences a similar moment, but with his faith in humanity. A mother’s protective reaction to adversity can trigger a sudden shift in beliefs and values. After the breaching of the outermost wall of the fortified city, Wall Maria, the Titans, heartless humanoid beasts that are at least several stories high and devour humans not as a food source but as a pleasure, invades the community in a raging manner. Eren realizes that his home was in the invaded territory and hurries back to his home with Misaka, his adoptive sister, to see its condition and their mother. After arriving and desperately trying to free their mother from under the fallen structure, one of Titans tramples to their direction. Noticing that she was crippled from the waist down, she begs Eren and Misaka to just leave her there and continue to survive while knowing that she’ll just slow them down even if she was able to free herself. Eren and Misaka escapes safely while they helplessly witness their mother falling victim to the terrifying Titan who consumes her alive mercilessly. The mother’s choice of a heroic sacrifice plus the effect of childhood trauma influences Eren to have more faith in humanity and the belief that it’s his responsibility to protect the human race by training to become one of the specialized soldiers who are trained to fend the Titans. Choices of action made during sudden and dangerous events such as the life or death situation that they experienced during the invasion of the Titans have more impacting effects emotionally and mentally on others than most other choices made during their lifetime. In order to continue to pursue his new beliefs, more choices of actions have to be taken to manifest his beliefs.

Even though the relationship between these two texts isn’t very obvious at first, the way that Norman’s beliefs were redirected positively by Paul’s intervention and the way that Eren’s beliefs were directed positively after his mother’s sacrifice are very similar to each other.  The effect range of the adversity for both are on opposite ends since in A River Runs Through It, the adversity was set to a personal scale for both Norman and Jessie while in Attack on Titan, the adversity was affecting an entire population of people. The choices that Eren’s mother have made are considered as selfless acts as his mother gave her life in exchange for the safety of Eren and Misaka. Also Paul’s choices are considered as selfless Paul uses his best qualities as a charmer to persuade Jessie to forgive Norman by saying how lucky she is to have Norman as a boyfriend as a way to save their happiness. The actions that Paul and Eren’s mother created positive influences to Norman’s and Eren’s beliefs respectively as Norman began to see Paul as someone important in his life not just as his younger brother and Eren avenging for his mother’s death by protecting others from the hands of the Titans as a specialized soldier who are trained to fight the Titans. Despite the different genres and situations of both texts, the same conditions have been met to create the positive shift in the protagonists’ beliefs.

Adversity in life is inevitable. One’s actions in response to the adversity can positively alter other people’s beliefs significantly. Whether it’s Paul’s involvement in his first relationship with Jessie or the mother’s plea for them to survive and having to unfortunately witness the gruesome death as they leave her behind, both events resulted in the positive shift in beliefs for the protagonists. Norman refers to Paul a lot as he retells his life story to the world just as Eren joins the military to take action against the Titans for who were the cause for his mother’s premature and bloody death as both are the result of the actions taken by someone close to them.

It was bad, but in a good way.

It was an early on the morning of October 26th, fog had lined the fields along the roads as we pasted them. It was supposed to be a fun day. I was supposed to be a day of coming together as a team and raising money. I couldn’t sleep the night before because I was so excited, we had made it to the semifinals! It was for the sport I loved and for a charity I now understand. Dig Pink. It was a charitable event in raising money for Breast Cancer. I thought nothing of the illness until that morning because little did I know my own mother was one to carry the illness herself. That morning before our first game supporting breast cancer and with creating this charitable event, my step dad had gotten a phone call with my mother crying in fear. What she had not realized was that I could hear the words clearly through her muffled sobbing mouth. She had been diagnosed with stage two breast cancer that very morning. In that exact moment for me time froze, everything I had had planned or imagined was gone. I could feel each heart beat vividly throughout my entire body as through an earthquake had struck in only my current position. It was as though my mind had shut down and my life had stopped in that present moment that I so desperately wanted to get out of.

My mother and I had never really been close until that day because it was then that I knew my mother was my best friend and it was then that I knew I could never let her down. I made sure from that moment on that she was taken care of and that she always had someone by her side making her smile. Making every moment count in her life as if it was her last, but at the same time keeping that mind set in her and myself that she was going to be okay and going to survive anything that was thrown at her.  I began having night terrors and visions of my mother dying in front of my eyes, but each time I woke up or came back to reality I knew that my mother was stronger than anything this world could throw at her and in the end stronger than life itself. Although I had to be strong for my mother I couldn’t be strong for myself. My so called friends were never there for me when I needed them the most, and when they were around they always seemed to tell me the things I couldn’t stand to hear, “get over it”, “stop lying”, and “who cares”. I felt alone and as though nothing made sense to me anymore. I couldn’t be sad around my mom and I knew I wasn’t allowed to feel anything other than happiness in my home because I could not risk my mom seeing how broken and scared I was of losing her.

That illness as terrifying as it was to go through with her I couldn’t imagine the pain and fear that continuously ran through my mom’s mind. I felt as though nothing mattered to me other than my mom, but what I couldn’t get through my mind was how my mother was actually feeling. How things were going for her and what I could do to help. Although fear and pain rendered our bodies senseless, that illness had managed to bring my mother and I closer than we could ever have been. In those years of near death experience we connected on such a level that is a once in a life time opportunity. I could never imagine life itself without that woman in my life. She made me the person that I am today and she is no longer just a mother to me, my mother is my best friend.

The Beliefs of Individuals

thCAW3XKZMJordanne

The beliefs individuals have become altered and influenced by the actions of others due to the end result of man’s ability to immensely trust one another. In trusting others we become manipulated into believing what they say and do without knowing the full extent of the truth. When we trust a person in life our beliefs become manipulated and influenced by the actions they portray whether they be false or true. This type of manipulation is shown through William Shakespeare’s play, Othello, when Iago attains the trust of his comrade, Othello.

In the play Othello, written by William Shakespeare, Iago has managed to manipulate and influence Othello’s beliefs on his wife, Desdemona, believing now that she is an unfaithful whore. Iago attains Othello’s trust through opening his mind and showing him only certain situations of what his wife looks like to be doing. He uses Othello’s individual passions for his wife to manipulate him to do whatever devious plan he desires. This illustrates that people can be manipulated into doing certain things that aren’t in the right through the simple act of gaining ones trust.

As well Iago does more than manipulating just Othello’s beliefs, he also alters the beliefs of a man named Roderigo. He does so by manipulating him into believing that Othello’s wife is really in love with Roderigo himself. Roderigo only believes Iago because Iago has once again attained the trust of another individual. With trusting Iago, Roderigo has no reason not to believe the horrible lie that Iago has started only to get him to do the dirty work of his devious plan. This over all illustrates that the human mind is easily manipulated by the actions and words of individuals that they have learned to trust regardless of the outcome. Humans choose to believe such actions and words because of the addiction towards excitement. Individuals want excitement so they become so naive to believe anything they are told without any evidence regarding the situation.

In my own personal experiences with peoples beliefs being influenced by the actions of others is happening every day. People believe what they want to change their emotions from its current state. By doing so this makes individuals lives more exciting and more interesting because they have more emotions and situations to think about than they can handle. We want so much more excitement in our lives that we become so desperate in looking for it that we start to believe anything that the people we trust do with their actions and words.

Many individuals put their trust in people that are inconceivable and manipulative which leads to our beliefs becoming altered by what they say and do without knowing the full extent of the truth. When we trust a person in life our beliefs become manipulated and influenced by the actions they portray whether they be false or true. In the end result humans are easily trusting leading to our beliefs becoming influenced by the actions of others because we let ourselves get taken over by the devious minds of others.

Judgement

othello-iago            We act upon the words we hear from whom we trust, whether it be for the better or worse, but when we are misled by our very own judgment upon one another is when we are at are most vulnerable. Faith in our friends and family is a double edge sword not knowing who to trust at our time of need.  When we’re confident in our decision to believe the words of a single individual we will carry out our resolve to the end to. This is evident through Williams Shakespeare play Othello by examining the character of Othello by his devoted trust in his beloved and comrades, also his passionate love for Desdemona, and his rash actions leading to his downfall.

At times we can only judge people by what we hear, but when we depend too much on what others say instead of our own judgment we will lose ourselves amongst the chaos.    Everybody trusted what Iago has to say never second guessing him in the venomous words he spread amongst his comrades.  Even his wife who helped him in his scheme by stealing the handkerchief of Desdemona.  Since people trusted his given title, little doubt was put in Iago’s words and actions which caused chaos and sadness to people around him.  The trust that Othello put in Iago was to great causing him to hate his closest friend and his wife at the end because of his well maintain name amongst the solider and the loyalty he thought he saw when trying to protect Casio from any major punishment that Othello would’ve given to Casio. When Iago presented the proof of Casio having the handkerchief it was when he believed Iago’s words were absolute. The Overwhelming trust and love a person can put in people can destroy what we hold dear.

The burning passion in our hearts can turn into an inferno that consumes our reasoning and our love ones.  Othello’s handkerchief he gave to her was a great symbol of their love and what bonded them with each other. The handkerchief significance was explained by how it was her mother and how she fell in love too when it was presented to her as a gift from her husband. The important memoir given to Othello by his mother was next thing he treasured most above all else.   When the handkerchief was stolen it broke Othello’s heart and the trust he once had for Desdemona.  The handkerchief is the red string of fate that bounded the lovers together but when it was lost Othello’s love and reasoning was lost with it. The passion was so great for Desdemona that it was the greatest wound he could’ve receive when the handkerchief was lost and how the green eye monster inside him began to come out.  The green eyed monster is a ruthless creature that will destroy what it can no longer have.

When lost in the midst of our thoughts the venomous words begins to works it magic by throwing us into the abyss of madness and grief. When receiving a letter from Venice Othello rage was at its peak lashing out on his wife in front of everyone causing disbelief and confusion among his fellow soldiers and comrades. Iago helped further his madness by suggestion how he could kill his wife and that he would carry out the death of Casio.  When the seeds of despair that Iago sowed in Othello’s mind begins to bear fruit the crimes that Othello committed could never be forgiven.  The order he gave to Iago to kill Casio and the cruel death of his wife was the rage he could no longer contain was release upon what he once held dear.  Words are human’s most powerful weapon when used upon a broken soul.

The strongest person can be brought to their knees when there most trusted companion throws them into a midst of uncertainty and their faith in others around them begin to transform into rage and jealousy.  Othello judgment on character was his greatest flaw as a general by putting trust in who did not deserve it such as Iago. This hate created disdain and contempt in his solider Iago and he uses Othello good nature to be filled with the contempt and disdain Iago felt for Othello to those around him causing him to fall deeper into the abyss of madness and chaos.

Silver Lining in Everything

I was heading down to the Chinese community center downtown for my martial arts lesson when I was around five years old.  I followed whatever my mother told me to do, not having my own opinion if I liked the class at all or if I was just there to impress my mother friends and family, but I remember one peculiar class that I had with a volunteer instructor that made all the classes worthwhile.  I had one friend with me in that class, I can’t remember what his name was and his face and it’s a struggle trying to fill in the details he had that made him unique.  The instructor that taught us was the child’s father trying to get us ready and prepare for the exercise we were going to do.

I was wearing a black sweat pants that were a little too big for me and I had to struggle keeping them up and a long sleeve shirt that I had to wear all the time since my mom was overprotective about the cold.  The gym was huge enough to fill in a thousand people, but everything looked big to me. The walls were died in a gray worn out paint and there were chairs the plastic chairs stacked up in the corners.  The stage was huge with red curtains hanging above it for a performance that we would have to show off are skills to our parents to impress them.  I wore slippers so it would be easier to move and practice kicks without twisting and ankle but the shoes were also much bigger than I had hoped for.  It was always hot in the gym since I was suffocating from the heat from the shirt I had to wear and the loud buzzing sound from the lights made this gym like a man-made concrete jail in the middle of the Amazon.

I never appreciated the teacher and the instructors since I didn’t really enjoy people being around me as much as I should when I was a kid and liked as little attention as possible.  I wanted the day to end with me going home and watching the creepy animals and cartoons that were supposed to be cute and adorable to the audience but I was mostly looking forward to the looney tunes.  When we were getting ready by changing our shoes and taking off our jackets to what was supposedly okay for a kids to wear, since the teachers didn’t wanted to get into a fight with any of the parents. We were than going to be separated into smaller groups since the age range was ridiculous and trying to clomp all the kids into one group would’ve resulted with 5 year-old eating a salty shoe with a side dish of broken jaws.

When we were finally organized we were separated even more by going with a parent who would run down the excessive with us, while preparing our stance we were shown how to properly kick.  I bend down my knees slightly to prepare to unleash a powerful kick, I than raised my fist as if I’m ready to guard an incoming hit, than in a swift moment, or as swift as a kid can get, I kicked as hard as possible into the air and my shoe went flying straight at the parents face. When the shoe hit the floor his faced looked furious, but I was laughing uncontrollably at the situation I created with these large and uncomfortable shoes.

I didn’t care what kind of trouble I would’ve got into since I was enjoying myself too much that I couldn’t assess what kind of punishment I could’ve received.  Luckily the instructor was reasonable and I only got away with a lecture that I just nod my head and said yes ever so often trying to look like I was attentively listing to his words.  The rest of the lesson was filled in with worthless kicks and punches over and over again, while making sure that my pants and shoes didn’t come off since they were too loose.  When the class was finally over I was relieve to finally go home and spend my time on the couch.  I put back my winter clothes on with my thick jacket and a toque for my little head that actually fit perfectly.  I headed out into the cold to the car finally leaving the hot and sweaty gym.  6357271457_b4592d690e_z

A problem life

As I stand in the darkness, staring blankly at a shadowy black wall closing myself off from the world lost in my own adverse thoughts. “What am I going to do with my life?”  Attempting to take the pain all on my own not knowing what is happening to me. After staring at the shadowy black wall for hours, I walk over to my bed allowing myself to surrender to the darkness.

After surrendering to the darkness, feeling as though the world has ended there was nothing else to do, as my thoughts had clouded over. Engrossed by the thoughts of getting help, I felt a darkness approaching the fear of getting help. Being blown out of my mind, as I consider of taking help from someone and dealing with my thoughts.

Suffocating with the thought of getting help from people from someone I jumped up and ran. My thoughts jumped place to place every time someone said lets go get help. Freaking out on the inside I stopped talking to everyone because I knew what he or she would say.

After a while I started to think to myself about what if I do get help, but the thought got even worse as the time went on. Life got tougher and I felt like I didn’t know what I was going to do anymore. So I started to close myself out from the world and stared at the black wall. As I stared and stared the wall stated to become closer to me as if the darkness started to take an affect on me.

The closer I got to the darkness, the more it started to take control and made me feel like that’s what there is to live for. Life never gave me a chance to pick a side but I started to close everything out and life appeared to be more difficult to live. While the hope of getting help became more weak then anything else.

Closer I brought the darkness the more help I needed tot get but I refused in all ways tot get some help. Life was getting harder and harder all the time I tried to avoid to get help.

Bleeding from my heart from the being buried in the shadows of pain, I stood there to wait and wait to avoid getting but the pain became sharper every time. Not willing to so anything I stood in the darkness of my room for hours. Not knowing what I will end up happening in my life.

As I stood in the darkness of my room, I started to remember my childhood and how happy it used to me. Willing to go back to become I child I started to block everyone out and started to live in a memory of a child. No longer in the mood of staying in my teenage life, I just wanted to go back and live as a child.

Standing in the dark I remember things I never wanted to forget as a little kid. Lost in the thoughts of childhood not wanting to get help to come out and live to fulfil anything anymore. Closing myself in the dark and out of people’s sight I became independent of myself.

Believes changing

People believe that they can do anything that lead up to their beliefs changing by either trust or betrayal, not realizing that the actions of that same person can misuse you as well as change your beliefs and break the trust of a person or even you, also at the same time hurt the person to the extent that they no longer now what to do anymore. It is evident that through the play Othello by William Shakespeare, along with examining the characters of Othello and Iago, it demonstrate how the beliefs and actions of ones can change quickly once they know the truth, furthermore in the excerpt The Last Lecture by Randy Paush further to show how he changed the dreams of people and made them possible to come true by the actions that he chose, and from my personal experience the way my beliefs had changed with the way I think and act around people ever since I was little. For one thing, in the play Othello by William Shakespeare shows how Othello had trusted Iago more than his life including believing him in every way because thought what he was doing was perfect and right, on top of that he believed in all his actions and what he did. Othello was reliable on Iago and could depend on him when he was out of the house, not realizing what he had going on inside of him. When Othello leaves Desdemona with Iago, he does not realize that he is not a trusting person and that she isn’t safe with him. Othello is blinded by Iago’s confidence and he believes him with all his heart and trusts in him even though he doesn’t know what he is up to. When Othello declares to Iago to take care of Desdemona while he is gone, instead of actually taking care of her; he changes his intentions from taking care of her to plan against him and see what he was could do to Othello. Iago was jealous of Othello and he had started hating him after he had made Cassio his right man. It illustrates that people can go through anything to change the beliefs of one person to get what they want in life to a limit of nothing or anything. Furthermore in the excerpt The Last Lecture from Randy Paush shows how he takes the actions and beliefs of others and puts them in the real world and applies in the world outside. In the excerpt it says that “all over the world, had been given the permission to dream big dreams.” It shows how people can belief anything that is shown to them in the way of things coming in at all causes. The actions that he talks about is that “while smart decisions were being made on the moon, a dumb one was being made here on Earth.” His views demonstrates that actions have a strong influence on people because many tend to belief that his values and actions were right, as long with what he gave to the world. Sometimes people become influenced easily by the others around them. Some people don’t know how to control their actions and beliefs when people are influencing them in a way they don’t know what is going on. An example from my life is that I have been influenced by my beliefs that I had no longer known what to do or even what to belief and what not to belief anymore in life. For example a belief and actions that have changed my life where since I was little I have been influenced by lots of people through my life to change how I believe and act around people. Life had gotten to the point where actions were starting to take place in my life and I could no longer find out what to do anymore. There is little doubt that our beliefs and actions are shaped, molded and influenced by the people around us in either a society or individually in life. Life is not always influenced by the things happening around us but the people that are influencing us at all times. Beliefs can be changed by people in early stages or late but at all times they are changed through our lives and actions are followed up behind them.

Othello-Innocent idol to deadly animal

Even though the situation we are in may seem clear, but the reality is the situation is distorting our understanding of what is absolutely going on. This is seen throughout the text of H.M.S Ulysses by Alistair Maclean; the foolish people on the ship are blind and can’t see the dangers they are pursing. The Naïve people go through the storm think it’s their enemy, but the truth was the cold was their legitimate adversary. Othello, a play by William Shakespeare, relates to H.M.S Ulysses because, like the sailors, Othello is naïve. He is naïve because Iago convinced Othello that his wife is unfaithful to him, although Iago is the one who is truly the man who is unfaithful to Othello. When an individual gets deceived by reality, the consequences can be dire and regrettable; this is evident throughout the whole play of Othello by William Shakespeare through the characterization of Othello as his uncertainty with his wife grows and Iago plants his lies in Othello’s mind.

Putting all your trust in a deceitful person can lead you into to a spiraling down fall because this person could make you question yourself. At the start of Othello Iago wants to take revenge on Othello, the moor, for giving Casio a promotion and not him, so Iago is going to use Othello’s trust of his lieutenants against Othello. Iago does this by simply making Othello jealous of his wife, Desdemona, and persuading him that Othello’s wife had an affair with Casio. Iago never states if Desdemona is seeing Casio, nerveless he makes Othello jealous of his wife and doubt himself. This shows how Othello was naïve because he should have doubted Iago right from the start rather than himself or his wife Desdemona. Othello can’t comprehend the dangers he is being steered into by Iago.  This is supported by the hysteric way he reacts when Othello starts to doubt his wife being faith full to him. Othello never thinks Iago could be wrong because Othello’s innocent mind towards people, His lieutenants Specifically, leads him to believe that “honest’ Iago would never lie to him. Truths can lay beyond what we can see leading naïve and innocent minds to believe they only see good.

When reality presents with us with just a display, which could be ambiguous, the interpretation that one may put on the image can make the individual question his or her life. As Othello progresses on Othello demands Iago to prevent him with some sort of truth to Iago’s lies of Desdemona cheating with Casio. This about the only time in the play where Othello starts to doubt Iago, but this is all changed when Iago shows Othello that Casio had a beloved hanker chef that Othello bestowed upon Desdemona.  The beloved hanker chef represents Othello’s love towards Desdemona and when Othello finds out he has an epileptic fit. Othello’s Mind can’t tell what is false and what is honest. So Othello’s mind starts to   If Othello could see past the shroud Iago has put up, or even if he talked about this to Desdemona, he may have seen the truth, but no he only can see the Façade of Desdemona Unfaithfulness.  Lies misguidances that life puts in front of us can lead us to go just little more insane or they can simply makes us do irrational actions that lead us to are dooms.

When an individual has lost complete control of his or hers life the only logical thing to do, in ones messed up mind, is to destroy the thing causing all of this drama, and leave us with regreat.  Hate is the only thing that crosses through Othello mind as the play continues on. He told Iago to murder Casio and then he would kill Desdemona but, Iago suggest to Othello to smother Desdemona in her sleep. So Othello proceed and he goes to his house, Desdemona is there scared that Othello will kill, which he does. Then after the cops come and arrest Othello for murdering his wife out of cold blood. Finally Othello puts it together that Iago has made a web of lies to get revenge. The guards bring Iago to speak for his crimes Additionally Othello stabs Iago, yet Iago still taught Othello even in death. Finally Othello kills himself. Essentially Othello killed anything and everything that was causing some problems: Iago, the one who gave him the lies, and Desdemona, the one who was where all his jealously was targeted to.  Othello was transformed into this good nature, friendly, and romantic idol whose then is turned into a Cold blooded, heart less animal. The only reason this happened was because Iago jealousy of Casio promotion caused Iago to put his Jealousy onto Othello.  When Othello had lost his mind he decides to take the control back by murdering everything that caused him pain. Soon after he regretted everything he had just done, and he had finally scene the reality of what was the actual truth. To counter act the shame he brought on himself he decides to kill himself.

So we see, in the play Othello by William Shakespeare That when an individual makes decisions that have dire or regrettable outcomes, the problem is always caused by an obstacle that one cannot see or is blurry; throughout Othello you can see this simply by looking at how Othello develops as an idol to an animal. Through the lies Iago, the loss of that o so important hanker chef, and then finally to Othello’s loss of innocents, through these three events cause Othello to go through a great load of character devolpment.

Adil LIT EXPLORATION

What is your opinion of the idea that our beliefs are influenced by action of other?

“Dream big dreams”, whether they comes from famous people who inspire us or from ordinary people around us or from events in our daily lives. What everyone needs is to dream big, see how far they can go and be driven by motivation to fulfill their dreams. In A River Runs through it, Norman holds high regards of his father’s beliefs and actions, and what  he did and why he did it. With time I have  recognized and accepted  role models who  have had me to realize how to dream big dreams and the family who encouraged me to explore and learn to be a successful individual. Beliefs inspire our dreams and apprehend our understandings of a successful future; beliefs are shaped by our experiences and knowledge that we’ve gained through the positive actions shown by our role models. The film A River Runs Through it  directed by Robert Redford. Inspiration of beliefs can be illustrated through Normans relationship with his father, the way  Norman’s father knowledge and  his conviction have taught Norman fly fishing and religion, Also having  role models like Leo Messi and Muhammad Ali have inspire me and molded my dreams, and the my beloved family gave me the ethical and moral part of my life and embolden to discover my own path to shape my future.

Sometime role models can inspire us to shape our lives. The two role models have learn perseverance from are Leo Messi and Muhammad Ali, that have changed me and made me what I am today and I would continue get motivation to set successful future. “He the best of our generation” said by Leos Fans. Leo Messi as role model for me, who accomplishment have sparked my dream and  to started looking at football (soccer) from different prospective and being humble.  After reading his biogeography and how he grew up to become a footballer  phenomenon. I understood why Messi stood out from all other footballers and why he had a lot of recognition. The secret was, he had clear goals and a routine that he envisioned for himself in his quest to become a great player. He strived to be the best in football despite of being diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency. Muhammad Ali was also any other man of his generation. His  restlessness  and ambition to get to where he wanted have fuel my dreams, and his quote “I hate every minute of training, but …, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion” have inspired me to “ Never give up”(Muhammad Ali).  This quote has been an aspiration  in my life and many of the things he did and why he did it,  has become a part of my knowledge to become a successful person. Not to mention that he had great pride in him and boasted about his skill and his  success. On the other hand Leo Messi show great humility and brought great success for himself. what I considered is that mixing both the role models beliefs or practices  through their positive experiences and adapting what I believe could lead me to successful future. My  role models have achieved  so much in such short time and why I look up to to them, is their  mission and plan they set out and gave it all their best.

Norman holds high regard of his father’s beliefs and actions, and what  he did and why he did it. A river runs through it by  Robert Redford.  Normans beliefs and understanding  have been shaped by his experiences and knowledge that he had  gained through the positive action of his father. The main character Norman is contemplates about his brother’s death and their relationship before Paul was in his dilemma. and how he felt strongly for helping Paul. Normans Presbyterian father was a role model for both Norman and Paul. Thought the understand of Normans childhood and adulthood, we can observe that  he was  nurtured by his dad, beliefs for fly fishing, religion, choosing a career and perspectives. The  father  said “ It is those we live with and love and should know who elude us. You can love completely without complete understanding.” As a result of the speech, he truly felt connected with his father in the last scene when his father was giving to last speech therefore left another impression on Normans life. In addition when Norman was a child he was taught fly fishing and their father “…considered our family river. It was there he felt his soul restored and his imagination stirred.” Norman and Paul had  love and affection toward each by going out  fly fishing and would increase every time they were at the “family river”. Keeping in mind that when Norman was all  alone he connected to the river and build empathy for his brother brought him appreciative for his father beliefs.  and the ideal of rocks said by father “…beneath the rocks…are the words of God. Listen” and if “we listen carefully all our live, we might hear those words.” I think this quote foreshadows Normans old age. Norman emulates to understand the tragedy of his brother’s death and to show appreciation for father’s lover and wisdom by going to the family river. One beliefs and action can be inspired  by ordinary people which can end up you life philosophy.

An individual may have had positive or negative experiences in life but what matter’s how a person would reflect and make it a positive experience for himself. I believe my dad has been  role model for me. In the past years, growing up with responsibilities and expectations have helped make me who I am today. what happened recently have made me realized the importance of trust and reminded me of the kinship my parents towards me. Last week My phone was wasn’t being my phone- the screen was going random things. After telling me dad, he replied with ” you should ask god or let it fix itself” since I didn’t have the money I couldn’t  buy a new phone and told me he could buy me one . ‘I should wait for nexus 5 to get back on shock’ he said, ‘if it’s sold out, it’s sold out!”. What happened was that Nexus 5 came back on and faith fixed my phone. After that I realized how important is it trust one parents and take knowledge of their wisdom and experience. We might not recognized the things others do to shape our beliefs but by time when a person looks backs and see he would build empathy and try to motivate others.    On a sunday my dad , my brother and I were at our pizza shore and my dad shared his childhood,  having a great responsibility after his father was blindfolded when he was 7 years old. I was quite shocked because this was the first time he told us about our grandfather, in such detail. I felt empathy and such poignant that I felt, I was incredibly lucky to have a dad like him. After that I understood the meaning of parenthood and that the knowledge that can be inherited through  their positive or unpleasant experiences of their lives.

Inspiration is an effective tool which can make our dreams so vivid and achievable and quite  often this comes from role models. With this in mind inspiration drives our beliefs which we have concluded by our experience and the wisdom we’ve obtained through action of role models. The impulse of our dreams can drive our beliefs from anything you like, for example Normans Father was shining example even after his death because of the last speech , also my dad love and affection when telling me his wisdom, and learnt the importance of hope and ambition to achieve goals and dreams from Messi and Ali .“Believe you can and you’re half way there”-Theodore Roosevelt.

Lit. Exploration: See Conflict as a Key to Better Yourself

January 2012: What is your opinion of the idea that the ability to face hardship is an essential human quality?

Out of poor circumstances, individuals can find inspiration and build their own character or beliefs. People who encounter conflict often suffer emotionally, which can eventually destroy their character or shift their values. Despite this, people who endure the hardships can gain new knowledge and wisdom from that experience. In Robert Redford’s film A River Runs Through It, we witness Norman Maclean realizing that he could love and accept people without the need to completely understand who they are. Then, in Randy Pausch’s The Last Lecture, he becomes upset and depressed before receiving a photo, which transformed his perspective and beliefs. Finally, I, too, learnt a life lesson from the difficult times of losing a close friend.

We often do not understand the situations we currently face until they have passed and we contemplate back to that time. In A River Runs Through It, Norman experiences sadness to the news of his brother’s passing. However, this changes as Norman listens to his father in church. His father quotes, “Those we like with elude us… we can love them completely without complete understanding.” This was a revelation as he reflected back to the news of Paul being beaten to death and contemplated all the actions that lead up to Paul’s eventual demise. The actions of Paul, seen from Norman’s perspective, were extremely terrible choices. Witnessing the difficulties, Norman figured out that his brother desperately required help, but his efforts of offering assistance were shot down quicker than a bullet in flight. The key message of “we can love without the need to understand someone” echoed in Norman’s life, which also influenced his character. Then the scene transitioned into Norman in his elder ages and fly fishing in the river, we hear his thoughts. His character from before and after the church scene are contrasted without the need to be displayed side-by-side. Norman develops stronger understanding for the people he encounters instead of having unpleasant judgments from seeing their actions.

As a child, our character and views can be easily altered by another person’s decisions. This can be related to Randy Pausch in his childhood years when he was in summer camp. While the first men on the moon were preparing to walk onto the lunar surface, the children at the camp were watching in anticipation. But due to the fact that it was getting late, the camp directors sent the children to bed. Peeved at the camp directors’ decision, Randy says: “The thought in my head was this: ‘my species has gotten off of our planet and landed in a new world for the first time, and you people think bedtime matters?’” Randy’s irritation is illustrated here as he is prevented from seeing a very significant event, a one-time occurrence in mankind history. It crushed his dreams, not just his emotions. However, upon returning home a few weeks later, Randy’s father gives him a photo depicting Neil Armstrong setting foot on the moon. Randy stated that the preserved photo helped trigger big dreams. This demonstrates how Randy has shifted from a negative mood to a positive character while also finding inspiration. He then states, “When you’re putting people on the moon, you’re inspiring all of us to achieve the maximum of human potential, which is how our greatest problems will eventually be solved.” We can clearly notice how the action of Randy’s father has reshaped his beliefs on humanity. He was influenced and says that inspiration can also contribute to the betterment and search of solutions for world problems. Randy’s personality and outlook on life problems has completely changed and developed.

While people can discover new inspirations or modify their character through time, it is different for each individual. Back when I was about 7 years old, I found a stray, small husky. It was adorable! The husky resided in my neighborhood and often crawled into my backyard to play. It was a close friend to me and I enjoyed the puppy’s company. Soon after a month has passed, the little canine never came into my yard to play. Every day, I anticipated the fluffy creature’s return, but it never appeared. Perhaps it was a few months or even years until I learnt the hard truth of the stray animal either dying or taken to an animal shelter. I was devastated. As time passed by, I reflected that it would be a waste of time to mourn forever about the pup that I considered as my friend. I knew I had to eventually stop and move on. So I did. To this day, I remember the tiny husky as a memoir of a great friend and to cherish those that you love. You do not know when they will move on into the afterlife, so make every time you spend with that person worth it. I’m always inspired by that quote in my head. It was a hard time to deal with because I had lost my one and only friend. On the other hand, I ended up taking a life lesson from it, in which I’m very grateful.

All in all, the strife we face help expand our personality and change our inspirations. People have struggled to deal with life occurrences emotionally, but they managed to receive important life lessons from the troublesome happenings. In A River Runs Through It and The Last Lecture, we clearly see the change in inspirations and character or mindset through Norman and Randy Pausch. The same goes for me and my stray husky. The author of the film and book attempted to connect to the motif of a person’s inspiration and character being altered through grueling circumstances to show that there is always a positive outcome even in the most devastating phenomenon. Overall, wisdom comes from experience, and experience is not solved easily. People who have gone through countless of conflicts suffered in unimaginable ways, but they are the wisest in our society.
