Free choice #2

This is a short excerpt from a script that i was writing at the beginning of the year. It is about a young girl, Mariana, who is ill and her brother, Edan, and his best friend, Shaun, are doing their best to try and help her and cure her of her illness, but they are running low on money and her illness is getting worse. The more Edan struggles with his sister being so sick as well as his situation leads up to him acquiring the ability to set things on fire just by touching them. The name “Edan” actually means fire and was one of the inspirations for this piece.

“Footsteps are heard. A man limps over to the phone “hello? 9-11.”

Shaun: “Are we really going to do this?”

Edan: “I don’t know; we need the money. She’s not getting any better.”

Shaun: “But that woman, she’s so old and it just wouldn’t be right.”

Edan: “I know I know…but Mariana is so young, she needs a chance to live her life, and we know that that woman has no one to leave her things too.”

Silence

Mariana(laying down): *cough*

Shaun: “I’ll go check on her.”

Moments pass.

Shaun: “How are you feeling?”

Mariana: “Alright *cough* how’s Edan?”

Shaun: “He’s good, he’s worried about you though.”

Mariana: “Tell him not to worry, i’ll be fine.*cough*”

Shaun: “I have, he’s just, not in a good place right now.”

Mariana: “Is he going to be alright?”

Shaun: “Yeah, he just loves you and he can’t imagine…(doesn’t want to hint at her death but it’s there)… you should go to sleep; it’s getting late”

Mariana: “Okay, could you please send Edan in here first?”

Shaun: “Of course.”

Shaun exits and Edan enters

Edan: You wanted to speak with me Mariana?

Mariana: I will be alright Edan, and when this is all over we can go back it how it used to be, okay? You really don’t need to worry so much, it’s not good for you.

Edan thinks about many ways he could argue but he looks deeply at his sister and doesn’t want her to worry about him

Edan: Okay. Get some sleep, I’ll talk to you tomorrow.

Mariana: Alright, Goodnight, I love you.

Edan: I love you too, goodnight.

Scene change to Edan having a vivid nightmare.

Everything in the house is burning and he is trying to save everyone. He hears Shaun calling out to him, telling him to find Mariana, and Edan desperately fights through the fire until the whole roof starts to collapse and he wakes up.”

Free Choice 1

This piece is a visual telling of a man and a woman’s relationship. There is no man within this piece because I wanted to focus on the imagery and it is generally easier for me to follow a story when I have one character to follow.

The first day, a willow tree sits firm in the ground; a newly placed streetlight stands tall, no light emanating from the bulb; it is silent.

The next day, a woman dressed in white, walking, passing the old willow tree. It is a calm day. She hums with each stride, step by step, one foot in front of the other. The woman goes home.

The next day, the woman walks again; the same path and the same song only this time she sings it. The willow tree’s leaves start to move as she passes.

The next day, the woman dressed in a white dress with a dark jacket, decides to try walking another path, only just to see if there exists another path that has such beautiful scenery. She walks down this foreign path, slightly confused on where to go, with every step, the wind getting more and more frantic; a storm has begun, she runs through the rain and the thunder until she arrives at home, drenched with the regret of walking that unknown path.

As the leaves blow in the wind there are the faint cries of a woman; dressed in all black, the crispness of the cold, the amber street light blinks on and off and the woman goes silent.

The next night, the wind blows harder, but this time there is no woman crying; there is no sound at all. It is silent. Silent except for the sound of the leaves bristling through the wind; the willow tree stands; the street light burns out.

The next night, a woman walks down the street dressed in all black; she is lost, there is no light for her to follow and as the wind blows harder and harder, she slips. The woman lay there, crying out in pain, hoping someone will hear. No one can hear her, for all they hear is the leaves of the willow tree bristling in the wind.

The next night, the wind has stopped and there is no one to be seen. No light, no bristling of the leaves, no woman; just darkness and silence.

Influence (Lit Exploration)

Influence

The actions of others can influence and affect the beliefs and ideologies of oneself; in the film, A River Runs Through It, Robert Redford explores this idea and displays it most vividly through the character of Norman. When someone grows up around people who are vocal about their beliefs then these beliefs can transfer over to oneself and can help shape one’s own ideologies and understandings for the future.

Within this excerpt we follow Michael Oher and he describes all of his memories of his favourite teacher, Mrs. Logan. Most of this text are memories of how you can see Mrs. Logan and how she firmly believed in all of her students; in doing what she felt was right she left an impact upon Michael and this is shown through the final line in the text. “I had carried that memory of Mrs. Logan with me for years because she made me believe that I had talent worth developing and the ability to see it through.” This quote is of Michael saying how he has clearly been affected by the actions of Mrs. Logan and how he has kept the memory of her for many years. This means that Michael has been touched by the actions of her not giving up, and believing in him and everyone else; everyone received the belief and encouragement that was provided by Mrs. Logan. When someone believes in you; one can feel the authenticity of the belief and that creates a cause and effect relationship; when someone experiences receiving the support then they are more likely to provide it in the future.

In the film, A River Runs Through It,  we primarily follow Norman, and we see how the actions of others affect Norman’s beliefs. The actions of Norman’s father have clearly made an impact on Norman as a person; though the art of fly fishing Norman is able to really connect to his brother, Paul, who has also grown up with the same values. In the beginning of the film we can see that one of the father’s main values are fly fishing, and with that we can see how it has heavily influenced and left an impact on Paul, but we are also shown how being away from the graceful lifestyle of fly fishing has affected Norman. Norman struggles to get back into the flow of fly fishing, but by the later parts of the movie we see Norman catching a lot of fish and finally accepting that grace that was once taught to him after reconnecting to his home, his father and his brother. This grace that was taught to Norman and Paul never actually leaves them, it only becomes weak when it is not put to use. One’s beliefs may be clouded but when the time is right they will sort themselves out and the influences that which implanted the ideas of them will be revealed, no matter how long it takes.

As an example of the idea of being influenced by others within my own life would be that I have experienced a lot and I will continue to experience more; this involves meeting new people and knowing how to treat them, and throughout a lot of my life I had the idea that I will pretty much be on my own for majority of my life, which is true. But I will have to talk and communicate to people everyday, whether I want to or not; I never had a solution for how I would deal with people in the future. In tenth grade I was introduced to the idea of infinite love and gratitude(ILAG) through my choir teacher, Ms. Orchard. This was new and strange ideology that I never truly understood until a year later when I was taught how to effectively use the ideology of ILAG in my drama class taught by Ms. Hunnisett. Within that drama class my core beliefs changed, I realized that everybody has good within them and that if you show ILAG to others then dealing with people becomes more than just bearable, it becomes enjoyable. In my final year of highschool I have drama and within it, one of the closest groups that I would call a family, I have ever met. This is all because of the actions of two teacher who’s strong beliefs have transferred over to us students and has influenced us for the better; I know I will never forget the lessons I have been taught and I know that I will continue to follow the beliefs of ILAG.

As one comes to realize their own beliefs, they will understand why they believe them, but they must also remember where those beliefs came from because I believe that the people who can change how one thinks are the truly important within life. It is important to reflect upon the origins of one’s beliefs because only then is it possible to see who truly impacted and affected your life.

Closers: Online Open Beta Review

Summary

The world is in ruin because of aliens that appeared from another dimension. They are causing a havoc and the government is training special individuals who have the powers to battle against them. The player is required to fight against them and gain experience as an agent of the faction they represent. So far there only 2, the Black Lambs and the Wolf Dogs. Black Lambs are the normal recruits that have been determined to possess the powers to battle against the aliens. Wolf Dogs were a hidden project, kept away from the Black Lambs, they possess great strength yet also manage to cause massive destruction.

Characters/Class

  • Black Lambs:
    • Seha Lee: the one-handed melee swordsman. Striker class.
    • Sylvi Lee: the ranged magical damage dealer(similar to a mage). Caster class.
    • Yuri Seo: the mid-ranged all around damage dealer. Ranger class.
    • J: the melee brass-knuckled fighter. Fighter class.
    • Misteltein: the mid-ranged charger who uses a spear. Lancer class.
  • Wolf Dogs:
    • Levia: the ranged dark mage using the powers of phase force. Witch class.

Progress

I had initially played the closed beta earlier this year. They had many other characters that have yet to be released on the open beta servers in North America. The one character that I am hoping they release soon is Harpy. She is similar to Yuri in which they both are mid-range characters with amazing skills that work well with one another. Moving on to the open beta, I have mainly been playing the character, Yuri Seo, because of her similarity to Harpy. They are both very fun to use in the combat this game has to offer. They many dungeons that require fast movements and clear speeds of each block that require massive amounts of area of effect and crowd control skills. Yuri especially has repeated amounts of crowd control in the form of knock-ups and knockdowns. As you progress through the game, you have a chance at promotion. Starting as a trainee, then leading to novice agent after clearing the first sector, and most recently, this is the farthest I have gotten, regular agent. To achieve the rank of a regular agent, you have to finish two sectors in which you are given the mission for the second promotion. Each time you rank up a certain character, they will gain four new skills that the player can obtain at certain ranks. I have gotten all but one of Yuri’s skills for the rank of a regular agent, that being the finisher move: Yuri Quick Draw! Currently sitting at the Gangnam Evac Center where the special events happen. Some key things that I recommend to newer players is that the game will level up ur abilities for you after a certain point in the story in which you have to manually upgrade them based on your playstyle. I recommend maxing you empowered state(G), Special moves: 5-Point Strike(F), Blade Fury(R) asap because it helps clear bosses at the end of the level much quicker due to the reduction in their armor and constant crowd control chain from both special moves. The game will also give you gear which can be found while killing aliens in the dungeons, these are very useful items that will boost up your damage or increase your survivability within high level missions.

Thoughts

Ever since I played the closed beta, I have longed for this game to come into open beta. I will take my time to slowly reach the rank of special agent, especially with Harpy once she is released on the server. It is a fun and interactive game that can lead to hours of non-stop gameplay. However, the developers have done a great job at reminding the players that they should not be spending all of their time playing an online game by adding a fatigue feature. The fatigue feature stops the player from overexerting their time playing the game and helps them get back into the real life where they should be studying, working, etc. There are more characters, missions, and other features to be added to the open beta server from the closed beta server but it is without a doubt still a very fun game with a good combat system that allows the players to express their fantasy worlds and make the players feel strong.

There is beauty in the struggle

Love Yours

Artist: J cole

Album: 2014 Forest Hills Drive

Released: 2014

Genre: Hip hop/rap

J cole released a song called ” Love Yours” in his 2014 Forest Hills Drive album. He talks about how individuals all across the world struggle in their own way.

If I asked you right now, “What do you love?” How long would it take for you to respond with “myself”.

Why we feel like we are not good enough? How do society’s standards and people’s judgment alter out thinking to believe that we are no good.

I remember scrolling down on facebook to see this post that read, ” There’s only good and bad people in this world.” That left to think how we become bad. And I don’t think I have found an answer yet, but what I know is everyone is capable of bring goodness into this world. Every one of us have the power to inflict positive change, to test society’s standards and question people’s judgement.

There’s only one semester left in our last year of high school. And no matter where we all end up in a few months for now…

I hope failure doesn’t make you give up on your goal

I hope loving someone with your heart and soul doesn’t end up hurting you.

I hope you find your dreams and chase them.

I hope you find strength in your bones.

I hope you live your life the way you want, no what others expect of you.

I hope you allow yourself to be free to the good and bad.

“There’s a lot of roller coaster’s life will try to put you on, and I pray you realize you don’t have to get on one single up and down ride, you don’t have to listen to anybody or the tricks they try. Your intuition is always enough to get you by.” – Clayton Jennings

” I hope you live sold out and push life to the limit.” – Clayton Jennings

“People throw rocks at things that shine, don’t let negative nobodies purchase property in your mind.” – Clayton Jennings

Memories

At the age of 5 you fell off your bike, you remember you broke your right hand. At the age of 10 your grandfather passed away, you remember it was from cancer. At the age of 18 you moved out of your parents house, you remember your mom crying. At the age of 31 you announced you were pregnant, you remember the kicks you felt. At the age of 49 your first born turn 18, but you still remember their first words and steps. At the age of 58 your mother passed away, you remember crying. Memories are what make us who we really are because they shape our past and it changes us for the future. Happy or sad they all stay in your mind, you carry them with you everywhere.

One of my most fond memories is from when I was in atom playing hockey, I played on an all boys team and this was when I was ten years old. This was such a good year we didn’t lose anything. We were a well rounded team with good forwards, a solid wall for defense and a rocking goaltender. We made it to the finals of playoffs that year and everything was going good until, I got a really bad sinus and throat infections. I had to stay home from school that day and my parents rule has always been; no school, no hockey. But this was the one day my dad made an exception even though I looked like I was dying and personally I didn’t wanna play. My parents convinced me that this was a once in a lifetime chance to do, so I went to the game and played. My dad, being the coach but also a parent of me, sat me on the bench every few shifts and made sure I was doing alright. The game was a very close game and in order to win it we went to overtime and dropped all the way down till 2 on 2 but then the other team got a penalty. This was followed through with a penalty shot because we couldn’t just do a 2 against 1 ove overtime. This kid on my team named Jax White got to take the shot, he ends up making a really sick move and no doubt because he had the best hands on the team. Everyone got so excited and so happy but there was me, sitting on the bench coughing my lungs out with tears rolling down my face. Everyone rushes to the goalie to celebrate, taking off helmets throwing our gloves and sticks in the air because we just won city champions. But I was so sick I could barely skate, I dragged my little skates across the ice till I made it to the team. It was such an exciting event but all I remember is just wanting to go home right after. I remember this as if it was yesterday because I have stored this time period in my brain to never forget.

Free Choice- Hollow Earth

I have chosen to share my interest in conspiracy theories in the style of an informal speech.

Have you ever imagined something completely unbelievable and know that there is no possible way that that is true but later find out that other people are actually speculating about the same thing? I experienced this a couple years ago when I was watching a video on Youtube discussing the most incredible theories about supposedly hypothetical instances that were backed up with hard-hitting evidence.

One of them that I came across was this theory about hollow Earth. This conspiracy theory states that there is no north or south pole located on Earth, however, instead there are gateways to travel to the inside. So, if you can picture it, it’s like two C’s facing each other but not touching on the top and bottom. The crust that we are on and the deepest part of the ocean is the lowest there is. And underneath is a whole different world that’s existing which is incredibly advanced and thousands of years further scientifically and otherwise advanced species of human who are living amongst mammoths, dinosaurs, and other extinct animals. Although this seems very untrue and probably is, the interesting thing behind is that there is a journal written by a pilot in 1947 who worked for the US Air Force that claims to have seen unusual things in the north pole area.

He documented in his journal what was appearing before his eyes during his whole exploration. So, he goes from seeing North pole type climate like snow and glaciers to seeing a valley past a mountain range with a stream running through with green grass surrounding it. He notices that this shouldn’t be happening but starts to lower his aircraft because of his curiosity for what may be. As he is about 3000 feet above the surface, he begins to see mammoths and other sorts of creatures as well as people. So then, as he is getting closer to landing, he happens to lose control of his plane and starts to drift through the sky without any turbulence. Somehow, he lands inexplicably and two tall blonde human-like creatures approach him and take him to meeting in their world. Basically, he is now in this different sort of environment and the other human species start explaining to him that your human race doesn’t know about us and the inside atmosphere of the Earth. The reason behind him being taken to this meeting is to tell him that they tried to communicate with your species by stopping the atomic bombs during World War II on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to convey that atomic energy is not to be dealt with and that is going to be the demise of your species and planet. But the US military didn’t listen and launched those bombs into Japan. Now, we are telling you to spread this message to your people so you don’t take atomic action again. So after all of this, he miraculously, using his plane, comes back to the US and tells people what he saw. The government restrict him from saying anything and basically shut him up.

A couple years later, his journal is found and posted on the internet where now people have been speculating if this is true or not.

My opinion on this is that it is probably not true because of the scientific observations about the Earth’s core and it is impossible for there to be an atmosphere inside of the Earth where people are able to breathe and function normally. I actually think it’s a little too far-fetched in the sense that it sounds like a movie or a book kind of similar to the science fiction movie, Journey to the Centre of the Earth. But being the devil’s advocate, there hasn’t been that much exploration underground. There is around 35 km of Earth crust and our human race has only drilled around 12 km inside. There is a possibility of there being something that we haven’t seen before. I am very interested in conspiracy theories and I like thinking about things out of the ordinary. I would love to know your thoughts on this so feel free to comment below.

Lit Exploration edited (Lasting Impact)

June 2014: What is your opinion of the idea that the influence of others can have a lasting effect?

In life there is so much that can influence and shape us. When something is done or said towards you, the ideas will continue on and affect the future you and that makes you recall the significant things in life. The future you is based on the past you and how things fall together in life, you mainly have to learn to surround yourself with the good people. Something as small as someone stepping out of their way for you can cause a lasting impact and you hold onto that memory. A lasting impact is like a memory that you hold onto it and it can affect you, it is something that will maintain as time goes on. Having a lasting impact that is never forgotten is shown with Paul and Normans brotherhood in the film The River runs through it, The last Lecture by Randy Pousch who tells a story about his childhood and in my personal life with a friend who had his grandmother pass away.

Some actions are done to support others in a way to help them be happy. In the film, A River Runs Through It, we see that Norman and Paul grow up together and move apart but one thing they are connected through is fly fishing. This is one thing their dad taught them as kids and they grew up masturing it. When they get separated for school and life they eventually come back together and they go out fly fishing, this is a notable moment in the film because we see the fishing bringing their brotherhood back together as if no one ever left. The lasting impact this one activity they had learnt as kids has carried onto their adulthood. It has become something permanent that they both can hold onto and be brought back together by.

Even when someone makes a comment you could still have a lasting impact that u remember. In the Last Lecture, by Randy Pousch, he tells a story about his childhood. He was at a camp and they were watching the first man take a step on the moon but it was getting late. They told all the kids to go to bed, this made Randy mad so he argued against it because he wanted to watch the first step on the moon. Sometimes the actions of others aren’t always a happy memory, sometimes you have to remember sometimes that aren’t as pleasant and learn or grow from it. To him this was a significant event that he has remembered due to it affecting him. He sees this as a chance where the camp director gave him an opportunity to learn and grow from something not super big. Randy has been influenced in his present life by this once in a lifetime opportunity to see. He learned and grew around it, becoming who he is today.

When someone steps out of their way to care for you, that will be remembered and help shape you to be a better you in the future. Just recently my best friend, Devon, had something tragic happen; his grandmother passed away. He was absolutely devastated and there truly wasn’t much I could do to help him out. I tried a lot including, meaningful text messages and or phone calls, hanging out, and even talking to his mom. None of this worked until it hit me that I needed to surprise him. So that day I went out and got a nice hoodie, gum, gatorade, comfort food and candy then put it into a box with a handwritten note. I the drove to his house, without him knowing, and left it on his doorstep so he would find it and open it with surprise. It worked he loved it and it took his mind off things and made him smile, which was exactly what he needed. To this day he will mention this, “Remember that time u left that box on my doorstep…”. This shows that my actions towards others can influence those around me. Devon took what my actions were and remembered it and used it for himself to be a better person. He took into account that I can show empathy and consideration though my actions. My actions had a lasting effect that he now tells everyone what I did for him. It doesn’t just affect Devon in this case but it affected me in the sense that he appreciated all I did for him, makes me remember the situation and build a better me off of it.

In the end we all have actions that will affect one another. The positive actions we show are the ones that are most remembered. But action can always influence those around us. Good or bad they change us in a way we like, they make us better people and allow us to grow. We see how lasting memories can impact us as humans and strive for excellence.

Speed is my Drug

I’am not even close to perfection but one thing I pride myself on is never doing any illegal substances and looking into the future I don’t think I will start ever. But recently I have become addicted to adrenaline. The adrenaline you get when you start passing 130 km/h.

Since a young age I have always loved cars and everyone around me has helped fuel this passion in one way or another. My dad has done the most by far. He  made sure that since I was toddler and up until now I have always had the toys I needed to keep this love for cars,  hot-wheels, various RC’s, etc. But the biggest sacrifice I wont forget is that my dad buys his sport cars with me in mind. He only buys them for me to drive because he has wanted one of those very expensive trucks for years now and my mom will never approve him having two six figure cars for fun.

Living  outside of the city has its perks, for me it is mostly the empty cop free roads. These roads are where most mornings if I feel down for whatever reason I put the pedal to the floor and within four seconds, when the needle is approaching 200 km/h ,my right foot with lighting speed moves over two inches to slam on the breaks . I can’t help remembering these moments because life is so much better when your  going more than a 130 km/h. Afterwards I feel guilty just because I think of all that could’ve gone wrong.

This addiction is perhaps the most reckless thing I ever do, that being said I still drive safe. These speed runs are only done on empty straight and flat roads outside of the city. My rule of thumb for driving spiritedly in the city is no more than 10% over the speed limit.

This addiction only became a thing after I got my own car because frankly my dads cars are fun but way to scary to let them loose. My car has 330 hp which makes it daunting  but I have had time to learn it and know how it reacts to my inputs and road conditions. It is a 2009 G37x and my two favorite things about it are the power, and how nice the interior is. Two things I hate are it gets really bad fuel economy and in general insurance companies do not like it or my age.

The River Runs Through it Literary Exploration

During our lifetimes, there are many people who have created or accomplished amazing feats. Their pathway in order to achieve those goals are awe inspiring as well. Other’s actions, either positive or negative, either people who are very close or and admired hero can change the outcome of your actions and shift your beliefs into doing what is right. In the film, The RIver Runs Through it  by Robert Redford exemplifies this idea through the one of the main characters, Norman Maclean. He struggles to help his brother through many depressing and dark situations ,but still finds motivation to help him. The values and teachings of his father largely contributed to his drive.

Norman as a child was deeply influenced by his father and his works within the church. He looked up to his father and seeked approval from him constantly through childhood and into his adult life. His actions would always be monitored by the father at a young age and was corrected many times as well; therefore sprouting his belief that he should not disappoint anybody, doing whatever he can in order to ensure another person’s happiness. Norman never wanted to disappoint his father even during adulthood with complete independence. During his return to his home state after many years of college, he was summoned by his father into the study. Norman was being judged. Initially he wanted to work for the United States Forestry Service but quickly faced with criticism from his father. Norman quickly replied with the fact that he would apply for a teaching position. Again Norman’s decision to become a professor was influenced by the father with criticism but also many years of observing the father’s ministry. There is not a significant difference between teaching literature and teaching religion, only the subject. Norman did not want to disappoint his father and please him so he decided on a profession that would guarantee approval from his father.

Similarly to Norman, I was also deeply influenced by my father and his actions. Norman’s experience with his father’s actions did not negatively change his life. My experience was very different. When I was born, I was faced with the challenge of having divorced parents. I did not understand what it meant but I knew Mommy and Daddy lived in different places and that was not right. Making other people cry, I also knew was not right but apparently not my father. After a lengthy phone call between my mother and father, the seven year old child that I was saw my mother crying and I couldn’t resist from helping and crying along. My father hurt my mom very deeply, so I vowed to myself to never hurt anyone and make anyone happy. Another similarity to Norman and his desire to please everybody. Which for me and Norman, grew from what our fathers actions. I made another promise to myself that day. Far in the future, I would hold the ideology and the values present in marital vows close to my heart. Breaking these vows was not an option. I never want the person I love to go through what my mother did, I never want my children to go through what I had to.

An excerpt from “I Beat the Odds” by Michael Oher outlines his early inspiration from a fourth-grade teacher, Ms. Verlene Logan. This teacher work above and beyond all expectations for any teacher in any grade. She worked hard to include every student and created an environment that fostered inner talent of students. She achieved this through constant reminder of every child’s importance and intelligence. Her catch-phrase, ‘“Can’t never could and ain’t never would”’ told all students to never give up and believe in your strengths. Michael Oher a during that grade was athletically gifted and was praised and recognized by Ms. Logan. The continuous encouragement allowed Michael to have self affirmation in his abilities throughout life and eventually succeed.

The actions of other people, no matter good or bad will always change our ideologies and values to reflect what we think is right. Close relatives, mentors and heroes drastically affect your life and future decisions. Norman wishes for approval of others and especially his father so that they can be happy. Because of my father, I want the people I cherish to be happy through my actions, Michael Oher was happy in achieving success because of his fourth-grade teacher, Ms Verlene Logan. Knowing what and who has shaped your beliefs can help you grasp the values in your life and make decision according to your idea of righteousness.
