Persuasive

Dear Prosper School Board,

My name is Alex Wells, and I am currently enrolled as a grade 12 student at Prosper High School. I am writing to you today to formally inform you of my decision regarding the proposal of a four-day school week. As a student attending the school at this time, I have decided that it is in everyone’s best interest that we change our regular school week into four days. Throughout my letter I will be discussing factors such as a new timetable, benefits financially, and educational advantages.

The first thing that naturally comes to one’s mind when thinking about a shortened school week, is not being able to finish the school year in time for exams; and that should be the main concern: however, regarding this ongoing discussion the Prosper High School have developed a new timetable that runs earlier in the morning and later in the evenings. With this new timetable classes will begin, Monday to Thursday, at 7:55 and will end at 4:04. Due to the extended day schedule they have also increased each block from 65 minutes long to 83; and have decreased lunches by 10 minutes and breaks by two. This shows that by losing a day from the week we gain more hours in our day. By having longer blocks we have more time to go through topics and even move on to a different topic. These extended blocks will help students get the time they need in order to ask questions and clarify information they don’t understand. By adopting this new schedule school may still go on during days that should have been naturally taken off. However, because of this new schedule it will give students and teachers to plan, learn, and teach much more efficiently, thus developing a more engaging learning environment.

The second point I will be discussing is the Prosper School budget. In any building, when it is running and occupied by individuals it spends money; money on heating, electricity, water, and much more. However, the less time people occupy the building the more money we save. In the average five day week at Prosper High School we spend around $190 for maintenance, operation, and transportation. With the new schedule, we would spend $166 a week, which is a $24 difference. This may not seem that much, but when $24 is saved every week over the course of a school year it accumulates. This money can then be out towards new equipment for sports teams or a new cafeteria or even an extension to our school. With the money that is saved the possibilities to enhance the students learning opportunities are endless; and that is how we should be viewing this as an opportunity to become better.

My third and final factor today are educational advantages. By adopting the four-day week many benefits will arise, and not just for students. Teachers will have more time to create and plan weeks that interest the student and make class time more engaging. This then will result in higher attendance rates. Having the one week day off enables parents to book doctors appointment on that day so that students don’t have to miss class time: and this is the strongest factor for me due to my medical conditions. Throughout my school years I’ve been missing countless hours of school in order to go to the doctors; and because they are specialists appointments they take a very long time to get in, so when you get your appointment and you have a test the same day it is extremely hard to get back from that, especially in grade 12. Another factor that ties in with educational advantages, is having more time to relax. Many students in grade 12 and a high percentage in younger grades are stressing about school and making their lives revolve around school. Students never have time for themselves, have time to relax and focus on other important things in life. When all someone does is stress about one thing it begins to take away from them instead of giving. By having a shortened week students can have time to relieve their stress and anxiety, which statistically speaking makes them do better in school and other extracurricular activities. And who doesn’t want an extra day to complete projects or study or even find a part time job.

There are many positive effects that come out of adopting a four-day week schedule; even more than what I have discussed with you today. This adoption will benefit everyone that is involved in this community, not just students getting an extra day off every week. I thank you for taking the time to read my letter and I hope it informs you of all the positivist and benefits it will bring to us.

Sincerely, Alex Wells

Persuasive Four Day Week

Dear prosper school board,

My name is Alex wells and I am a grade 12 student at Prosper High School. I am writing to you in hopes that I may be able to influence your decision on the proposal to adopt a four-day weekend. Having a four-day weekend would mean staff and students would now have Friday off, however I think we should reject the proposal and continue with a five-day week. I am part of many things around Prosper like the school play, Music Jam TeenFit! and orienteering while doing this I also have a job at Rosie’s Flowers having 8 hour days with short breaks would only cause stress for me and many other students I know who are in my shoes.

As a high school student who often stays after school for different extracurricular activities I know firsthand how it feels to have long hours and very little sleep. The schedule sent out to parents showing what the new school schedule would look like shows that students would be in their first class at 7:55 am and their last class would end at 4:04 pm. Most kids already struggle with balancing their social lives and school lives at the same time making it difficult to have time to rest. Especially for those kids who do extracurricular activities like myself would now have to have a three-hour rehearsal then have to go home to eat and finish homework that was given during the day as talked about on Fastpoll.com by Casey Schram who is a basketball player. During this day and age, it’s hard for kids to go to bed at an appropriate time since we spend the whole day having our brains stimulated by the world around us. As teens we also deal with stress more than any other generation because of the constantly changing world. Being in grade 12 has taught me how to balance this but how are kids just coming out fresh out of middle school supposed to adjust to having longer classes and shorter breaks this wouldn’t help our education system get better. The Academic Journal has recently reported that researchers have recently noted a connection between sleep and learning. They discovered that cutting one hour of sleep drops mental alertness by one third and though a three-day weekend seems promising attempting to catch will only wreck your sleep cycle worsening your sleep deprivation.

School tends to have kids on a particular schedule where they see their families very little spending a lot of time studying and doing whatever activities they are involved in during the school year. With a three day weekend families will now be able to spend time together and go on the getaways that are marketed by www.costlinetravel.com. The cost of having the school open only for four days is projected to be less than what it is now with the current five-day week but concerned parents like Kristina Oudet have pointed out the fact that they want their kids in school from Monday to Friday while they are at work, leaving their kids unsupervised on the Friday of is not an option. This is an opinion shared by 64% of the parents who voted on FastPoll.com. When considering whether or not to accept or reject the proposal I urge you to consider all parties involved including the students, staff, and parents. About 82% of educators would want to see a four-day weekend so they may be able to see some of the benefits like more time for teacher planning and higher attendance rates. Though there would be a projected higher attendance rate it would come at the cost of having fully awake and aware students who are prepared to learn, adolescents need more sleep as they grow and develop to maturity meaning it would have the greatest effect on them with 33% of students saying no to this change.

As a working student the time I can have trying to make money is very important to me since I am trying to go to university next year. Currently at Rosie’s Flowers I work from 4-6 on Monday to Friday and 10-5 on Saturday, making about none dollars an hour for fourteen hours per week making one hundred twenty-six dollars per week. If the new change was to be implemented had I still been in school, I would have made the same amount of money per week as before. Working students would have no break for themselves if this change were to happen they would instead go to school for four days having eight hour days and then when the weekend came would work for the majority of it making the same amount as they had before. I know firsthand that maintaining a schedule like this and keeping grades were they need to be would be draining for many especially high school students whose brains are still developing.

This decision of changing the school week would greatly impact those students who are a direct reflection of the town’s education system. If we make this step, we would be the first to do this and all the other towns are looking to us to see if this would work and that’s why I have to the Prosper High School Board in hopes that I may sway you to decide to reject this proposal. Accepting the proposal will pose the problems of lack of sleep in students, increased stress and a hectic schedule that would be very difficult to handle. I urge you to reject this proposal for the betterment of this town. Thank Prosper High School Board for listening to my opinion on the matter.

Sincerely,

Alex Wells

Persuasive

Dear Prosper School Board,

I, Alex Wells, am a grade 12 student who attends Prosper High School and I am not a fan of  the current discussion of the new proposal on having a 4 day school week Monday-Thursday. Despite this proposal not affecting me personally this year due to it being applied next year, I believe it is not a great approach. The effects that this will have on the performance of the student will be drastic as evidenced in the research on the effect of sleep patterns on student learning, the many polls,

The thought of having a three-day weekend every time creates a temptation to be able to get some rest and catch up on our sleep. With such an approach this will disrupt the sleeping patterns. With that, an individual may become sleep deprived resulting in an effect in emotions and academic performances (disturbances in attention span and critical thinking). In the poll for this proposal on FastPoll.com, we can see there is an undecided vote for the students, but overall a disagreement for the 4 day school week. We can see 31% yes, 33% no , 36% undecided in the poll for high school students. These stats demonstrate the unsure and the disagreement, this may stem forth due to the extended school day. Within the 4 day schedule there will be an increase in 18 mins per period, a decrease in 2 mins for the breaks and a decrease in 10 mins for lunch. This impacts an individual’s schedule due to students having to get up earlier and get home late this will affect their handle on the time schedule. As expressed by Cassey Schram (hoops79) basketball practice at 4:15, getting home, eat and do homework without being up till midnight and starting all over again at 6:00 am on the bus. This will affect the lives of the students and the parents. In the poll for the parents there was a majority with disagreement at 64%, 22% accepting and 14% undecided for the proposal. These results demonstrate how with a 4 day school week will affect everyone’s schedule. With disapproval and uncertainty for the students that are receiving the education this implies the impacts and how this might be catastrophic for them in a sense.

The 4 day school week however seems to be favored by the teachers and community groups. Teachers have a high agreement on the approach with 82% of teachers agreeing on FastPoll.com. They believe that they will be able to have more time for planning and preparation, one weekday off enables scheduling of appointments for staff and students that do not infer with the school day. However this can be accomplished during the weekend, despite that the collective that agree with the proposal want to see volunteering and utilizing the time for the Friday and the space of the school during that time for that. Even though this may be a great idea  I believe that we may reach a compromise with a half day on Friday. This will open the thought for these reason and allows for considerable middle ground on the topic it will allow for rest, extra time for teachers, shifts for students and allows for the students receive their education at a considerable pace. The half day would allow for a much more efficient use for Friday rather than having no school that day.

As an individual that is currently in grade 12 the idea to have a 3 day weekend seems great but causes some issues. With constant stress from school and activities I base coping with such things during my timer at home. Being able to have a schedule that has been day to day normal allows for me to go to school and allow for me to get optimal learning. With having a 3 day weekend at times feels nice yet during that time frame I use my advantage of being able to relax for a long time then becoming stressed with completing homework on the Sunday. Just buy the 5 day school week at time I have a lot of work needed to be done resulting in me doing work till midnight, despite that I am able to go on the next day work fine. But the thought of four days staying up to midnight and getting up at 6:00 am makes me sick. Yet the thought of having a half day on Fridays will relieve some stress and allow for student like me to get anything done.

With over all consideration on students being affected by their sleep patterns and the stem of the issue with having the extra weekend off creates a chain of impacts with the students performance. I urge that you the school board do not approve of the proposal or rather reach middle ground and create a half day on Friday.

Thank you for reading my letter, Sincerely Alex Wells.

Persuasive Writing Piece

Dear Members of the  Prosper School Board,

My name is Alex Wells and I am representing the students of the school with the proposal of trying to get a four-day school week instead of having the students going to school for a full week. Having students going to school only four times a week can have many benefits to it.

Having students go to school for only four days a week does have many advantages to it. Not only would students go to school one less day. It’ll also help with the school budget when it comes to the maintenance, operation and transportation costs. Statistics show that if students don’t have school on Friday, the costs of the maintenance, operation, and transportation would decrease. This means that we, as a school, will be saving more money than before. With all the money that we saved, we could do more activities around the school and being able to upgrade anything that we wanted to because of the fact that we had the money to do so. We could also fund more trips to places that the student would want to go to as well. By having Friday off, we can have more activities on Friday. The community groups believe that if Friday was off, then they could schedule more activities for students and to be able to attract more volunteers. The ad also being able to use school property for free use with the exception that we all have to use the property with much respect. Another idea would be to extend classes and changing the schedule to be 83 minutes instead of having it to be 65 minutes of class. That way the students get more information in the week so then it makes up for having Friday off.

Not having Friday off every week would more learning time for students who need education. A poll was made in order to see who would agree with the four-day week of school and the majority of the parents voted no. the user that goes by the name Kristina Oudet (workalot349) said “ I want my kids in school Mon to Fri when I’m at work, not in front of the tv all day. The thought of unsupervised Fridays off gives me nightmares.” Most parents thinking would be similar to Kristina’s. A lot of parents want their kids to be at school because if they had Friday off, they wouldn’t do anything productive when they could be learning more at school instead of just wasting time.

According to Phillips, a researcher, studies show that adolescents need more sleep in order for them to grow and reach maturity. He also says that when trying to catch up on sleep, it disrupts the sleep cycle even more because then the body doesn’t have a consistent sleeping pattern. This means that kids do indeed need more sleep because without having enough sleep, kids can’t do the best in their ability. They wouldn’t be able to show their skills in school if they aren’t getting enough sleep. That’s why, when having a four-day week, it helps students regulate their sleep and being more active in school activities and paying more attention in school. If students have slept then they are able to work and study there hardest instead of having to fall asleep every hour of the day. Having a lack of sleep can also affect the emotions of a student that could lead them into not being as successful as they could be. Students have a lot of potentials and if they aren’t getting enough sleep then it’s all wasted since they can’t think properly. Another thing is attendance, four-day weeks can result in higher attendance at school and teachers can also have more time planning for what they want to plan for the week of school. It’s a win-win situation.

Having the school to have a four-day week has its many advantages financially, socially and academically. It provides more freedom for students to do more activities, getting more work done and especially getting more sleep on the 3 day weekend that students could have. I would urge the members of the school board to accept the proposal and implement it soon enough. If you need any more information, my email is Alex.Wells@gmail.com and if you would like to talk to me my phone number is 123-456-7890.

Sincerely,

Alex Wells

Persuasive 4 day week

Dear Prosper school board I write this letter to you on the proposal of a four day school week, my name is Alex Wells and I am in grade 12. I have taken in all the potential factor not only for students but for parents and teachers, looking at both the pros and cons. I respectfully ask that the board keep my letter in mind when making the decision and to also remember their own responsibilities.

At first a four day week may sound very appealing and most will quickly believe less school equals less work and more free time but we should take in all the factors at hand. No matter how many days of school there will be there still must be a certain amount of class time required, and in the case of the Prosper School Board there would be longer school days starting at 7:55 and ending at 4:04. Having longer school days will begin to change the quality of students’ lives, an example of this can be seen with our student athletes who are worried they will have to attend practice after school at 4:15 then return home to eat and do homework while still being expected to wake up at 6:00am the next day and rebegin the cycle. There’s still one thing missing in a students four day week that wasn’t even mentioned in the student athletes day, every student needs a mental break from all the stress that comes with school and must be allocated time to relax. This period of relaxation resets teenagers minds and helps them refocus again. The Academic Journal states two important points in their latest research on the effect of sleep patterns on student learning first stating that teenagers require sleep to grow and mature, also that cutting sleep by just one hour drops an individual’s alertness by one third. The effects of sleep loss do not become worth the amount of days off as students would waste their time off trying to catch up with their sleep on their days off.

The opinion of teachers should not be taken into account when making this decision as this loss of rest will not affect them. This is displayed by the amount of school staff who said yes to the idea of four day weeks as they would be given fridays off. Teachers do not wish to have friday off for the benefit of the students but for themselves, so they are able to do other activites such as party and spend time with their friends .the opinion of parents shouldn’t be used when deciding as some of them as seen on Fastpool.com comment by Kristina Oudet believe that school is almost a day care for their young adults where they don’t have to worry about them. Thus creating a bias opinion for parents to not intake the other factors at hand, such as their child’s education or the amount of rest they will have.

I personally find it very alarming when the idea of students sacrificing rest just to gain an extra day off becomes acceptable, all students require the correct amount of rest time. If we are unable to keep the students of Prosper in the best mental and physical condition we will begin to see success rates fall lower and lower academic achievements. With the way the school system works now students have enough time for everything including work.shown by Rosies work schedule she will have the same amount of work hours per week without facing the risk of lost sleep and a greater amount of stress. Students such as Rosie prove how efficient the five day week is and why it should be kept, why must something be changed if it works perfectly fine.

With all the reasoning given I find it clear that the four day school week should never be implemented, the cons outweigh the pros as the students quality of life should come before the benefit of anyone else. The schedule implace right now vastly beats the new one with pros and helps students become more successful.

Sincerely, Alex wells

Persuasive Letter

Dear Prosper Town Council:

I am a recent graduate of Prosper High School and am currently attending Harvard University. I am writing to you to discuss the proposal for separate genders core classes for students at your high school. In my experience with having co-ed classes I would support this proposal for future education at Prosper High School.

Your council is considering whether or not to separate students in core classes by gender while their option classes will still be co-ed to have a balance of social skills. This proposal would change core courses such as Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and English into separate genders classes to provide better outcomes from students and higher graduation rates. However there are some who believe that gender separation is not beneficial to students and see it hindering students social skills and inflict more prejudice. I see how this can be a problem for many who are opposed towards this proposal, but I believe that this change can benefit students of different learning abilities. To support my position in this matter I think gender segregation benefit the students to focus on their studies, achieve better grades, and learn from those who may think the same as they do.

When students are in classrooms that have both boys and girls there tends to be distraction from both sides whether it is girls wanting to talk to the guys or boys fooling around with other boys to impress the girls. This is not bad in the sense of social skills and interaction but it does affect learning development and may hinder an individual’s ability to focus on their studies. An individual who voted on the FastPoll.com website, commented that his cousin attends an all-boy school and is doing better due to the fact that there are no “pretty girls” to distract him from his focus on school. When students are able to focus on what they are learning and studying will benefit the school’s grade average since students would not have too many distraction around them.

Researchers have found that all-boy or all-girl schools have a better overall academic averages than a co-ed school by 15% from an all-girl school and 13% from an all-boy school. That is a big gap that can be easily fixed by separating core classes within a co-ed school. By having girls and boys take gender segregated classes the factor of less distraction will help students focus on their work achieving better test scores than before. Girls and boys have different ways of learning because their brains work in different processes to help them accomplish tasks. When students are able to communicate with same gender students they are working their brain in a way they were unable to do before. When students start achieving better grades, the average of the school will rise and the school will have a better reputation. The school will become known as a school that accompanies both boys and girls and focuses on individual learning.

The development of boy’s and girl’s brains while learning is very different and by having them attend classes that are major for graduating it would be best to have gender separation. By having these kinds of classes students can communicate with others who have similar ways of thinking which benefit student’s learning. From looking at a English Literature Propose Reading list I can see that the differences in what girls want to read and study compared to boys demonstrates that when students are in classes with others of the same gender they are able to talk to each other without having to pretend they like a certain book that the opposite gender likes. Giving students the choice to be free upon their likes and dislikes gives them more space to develop who they are.

I believe that Prosper High School should have segregated core classes to provide students with a better learning environment to accomplish better graduation rates for the school. I would like to see that the town council slowly start to have students learn in gender separate classes so that they can see how it benefits them as a student. By slowly bringing this into the school it will make it feel normal than just a sudden change that can cause havoc. Thank you for your time and consideration to this issue and I hope the council makes the right decision for its students.

Sincerely,

Terry Reid

Should Students in Core Courses be Separated by Gender? (Persuasive Writing)

Image result for separating students in school by gender

Dear Prosper School Council:

I am an alumni student who attended the University of Toronto, and it has come to my attention the proposal you have put forward for concerned individuals, as myself, to make their views known. Through considering information and opinions from a variety of sources and seeing advantages and disadvantages of the proposal I have reached a decision. Students who attend high school, are able to make relationships with peers and learn from each other, those students who are denied the access to coexist with each other, will experience prejudice and will hinder the students’ access to learn valuable social skills and to become open minded. I have done extensive research regarding this topic, and I am going reject this proposal.

The idea of separating students based on their gender in core classes, is not a great choice as statistics have shown that those who are not able to coexist with the opposite gender, have trouble going out in society; they lack the ability and skills to work with others. Although students may lack the skills of being able to cooperate in society, research has also shown that with separate classes for both genders, the academic averages in school have increased if both boys and girls are taught separately without one another’s influence. Furthermore, with receiving education it is important for one to attain the right skills on how to work in society, how to work with others that are opposite to your gender. To not put the proposal into action would be the right decision made. Research has shown that if both genders coexist amongst one another, they will not have to be awkward around the opposite gender in society, stereotypes about the opposite gender would not trigger the minds of the students, they will not lack the opportunities to work together in a workforce.

Students who are able to learn together in a class, build the skills that will allow them to not be awkward around the opposite gender in society. In the society we live in it is very important for one to have the skills and attributes to not be afraid to work with the opposite gender. Statistics show that those who have learnt and coexisted with the opposite gender in school are likely to do better and become an active citizen within society, because they were able to cooperate with one another because of integration. A student who attends high school, Simon Hamilton, says that although if classes are separated, students will be able to learn better and achieve a greater average, they will not be able to use those skills in society because of the awkwardness of being around the opposite gender.  For one to truly use the knowledge and education acquired in school, it is important for one to coexist with the opposite gender to prevent prejudice and hinder the skills they received.

Students who are already in a classroom with mixed races, ethnicities and genders will be well prepared for society that is so diverse. Students will not have to have stereotypes trigger their minds about the gender that is opposite to them. For an individual to work well and be able to earn a living for themselves it is important for them to have an open-mind and not judge another person based on how they look or from not being exposed to those types of people. Integration is the key idea for a society as a whole to function well and not end up being judgmental toward other members of society. Research shows that the major causes of fights and discrimination in society is not having an open mind and not being exposed to other peoples of different ethnicities and genders. Bullying is caused by having the lack of knowledge about the people around us. A concerned parent about their child’s life states that, if classes are separated according to gender that might do more harm than good. In which the school would only be reinforcing harmful stereotypes about boys and girls. So, in order for our society to work well and not have discrimination so high, it is important for classes to not be separated based on gender.

Students who will already work together in class will not lack the abilities to work together with opposite genders in their workforce. Psychologists and neuroscientists state that separating students according to their gender is what reduces boys and girls the opportunities to work together. For workplaces to have peace and tranquility it is important for the idea of cooperation to already be introduced at schools. We need a society that is not afraid to work with one another because of the way they look.

I believe it is important for students to work together with one another in order for them to gain the skills to do so in society. I Would like that the council of the high school to not make this decision of separating classes according to gender, because that will only cause problems for them when they go out in the outer world. I greatly appreciate your time and hope whatever decision is made, is made with thought and consideration of the lives of the students when they go out into society after high school.

Sincerely,

Terry Reid

An Open Letter to Prosper High

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/70/b4/de/70b4de12461b8f7fc69ed5be6f813ff1.jpgDear Prosper High School Parents Advisory Council:
Hello! I am Quinn Whitley, a student in senior year at this high school and I believe that a dress code should be imposed upon this school. As the lack of a dress code is: alienating students, and simply is not safe; the benefits to it are more than the cons of it.
The alienation of students is a likely effect of not implementing of this dress code. It alienates people of different religion, beliefs, cultures, social, or economic status. Many religions and cultures are much more conservative, modest and restrictive on what they may wear than current western culture, the immodest dressing of the student body would alienate those whose culture, religion or parents religion forced them to wear more conservative clothes, in addition to alienating the parents as they may not want to send their children there which may further isolate their children. Not everyone who goes to this school is equal on the economic sides of things, and the less fortunate who go to this school would feel alienated from those who are up with the newest fashions. Another concern about the lack of a dress code in terms of alienation is the cliques, groups or gangs, that might wear symbols or similar colours together, others that might want to wear or wear accidentally will cause them to be alienated. Schools should be places where all are safe to come and learn, for people to be comfortable in learning.
The safety of the students is at risk without the use of a schoolwide official dress code. For one living in Alberta specifically in the south of Alberta in the path of the Chinooks winds, the weather can change from decently warm to freezing, and the lack of covering and protective clothing that has become common for some female students aren’t practical, while layering is effective, many students don’t bring jackets to school. Points and spiked jewelry with one stumble can be an injury. Bandanas and any insignia or articles of clothing that signify gangs can lead to violence between the those of opposing factions. The lack of regulations is simply dangerous and impractical.
Those who would oppose this new dress code, would argue for self expression, the cost of purchasing clothes. Students can express themselves, in more modest, respectful and safe way. On the note of the cost, they are growing and will need new clothes anyway. There is no reason able to truly hold against this dress code.
In conclusion, this dress code is beneficial to the students, with no clear reason to turn down the code. With at risk the safety of students, physically and socially. Let alone the Cognitive studies that have shown students without inappropriate distractions perform 20% better, and 30% better on cognitive assessments. The dress code would be good for the school, despite the opinions opposing it.

-Thanks
Quinn Whitley

Assignment III: Persuasive By Zaha

Dear Prosper Town Council,

My name is Kerry Sinclair, and I am a graduate from the Prosper High School. I am writing to you today in the pursuit of persuading you to accept the proposal of closing the movie theatre. I believe that it should be closed because people are able to watch and download movies for free, and the theatre is not making a profit.

From the website fastpoll.com the only 30% of the citizens in Prosper want to keep the theatre. Everyone else wants to get rid of it because if its a movie that you want to watch there are website online that you can download the movies from. If you want to spend time with your loved ones you can sit at home and watch the movie at home. Also a benefit from this is that you can save a lot of money as well. You can download movies for free so why spend money, stated by Red Watts. The building is quite old, it can become dangerous in the future. The best thing to do as stated by Jessica Slevinsky, is to “tear it down & build something useful.”

The chart about Revenue and Expenses of the theatre shows that the theatre did not make a profit. There expenses were so high that their revenue never caught up. The money that they are spending to keep the theatre open is all being wasted, it can be put towards a better cause. For example the Youth Centre is a small area compared to the Fitness Guru Health Centre, if the Youth Centre is renovated and made more attractive to the Youth the council can make a profit and there money will be put to a proper use, instead of it being thrown out the door.

In conclusion myself and my fellow Prosper members believe that the theatre should be demolished and the money should be put towards something that is useful and beneficial for everyone. Thank you for taking the time to read my opinion about the Aurora Theatre. I know the decision that you make will include everyone and be right. If you have any further questions or concerns please feel free to call me at 418-123-9876 or email me at kerry_s@gmail.com. Once again thank you and I look forward to hearing about your desicion.

Sincerely,

Persuasive: Movie Theatre

Dear Prosper Town Council,

My name is Kelly Sinclair, and I am a recent graduate from Prosper High School. I am writing to you today in order to persuade you into accepting the proposal of closing the town theatre. Throughout our history, our society has taken many progressive actions. This would include society raising awareness of environmental issues or science expanding our small world into one of awe and wonder with its’ new discoveries. Such progressions are what has made our society today so successful. The reason that I believe that this proposal should be accepted is because movies can now be streamed at home through the internet, the space the building that the theatre occupies can be used in another more effective way and finally the theatre is not making enough money to support itself in the first place.

Being an individual of this era and a personal user of the technology that today’s world has to offer, I am aware of the accessibility that one has with the use of the internet. I acknowledge that having a theatre is a beneficial way of bringing many members of the community together and allowing those who do not have access to computers or a device on which they can stream movies to enjoy them. At the same time, I think that the majority of society uses other methods in order to stream films. For example, user redtech123 states the following “I just bought a new eState-why would I pay $$ for a ticket to a movie I can download for free?” Movies are becoming more accessible to individuals through the internet or devices such as the eState. Being able to stream online gives access to more individuals as it is available to any individual, rather than limiting the number of individuals that can be watching the film at any given time due to the space available in a theatre.

The building of the theatre is one that is incredibly old. “This building is more than a landmark that has stood for 75 years.” This theatre is a vital part of this community, but it is not being used to its’ full potential currently. By renovating the theatre into a place like a community centre, we will be able to serve more individuals as it will be an attraction to more than just teenagers. As shown by FastPoll.com, both in males and females the majority of the individuals that come to the theatre are between the ages of 13-17. By making the theatre into a more useful facility, more individuals will be benefiting. Also, as stated earlier, this building is a vital part of the community and by reconstructing the building it will remain as a heart of the community because it will continue to serve to bring the individuals of the community closer just in a slightly different and more beneficial way.

Finally, I think that the Prosper Town Council should reject the proposal because it is unable to sustain itself. The chart that displays the Revenues and Expenses of the theatre is clearly demonstrating that the theatre has not been able to make enough sales in order to pay for its’ operation costs, film rental and finally its’ wages. This is a clear indication that the community has no need for the theatre and is not currently using it. The use of this space is currently limited but it can be built into something more beneficial that attracts more individuals. Since this space is considered a “landmark” for the past 75 years we would not want such a pinnacle in our community to wither away, would we?

I believe that the Prosper Town Council should accept the proposal of closing the town theatre because, in modern day society, movie is much more accessible to all individuals even outside of the theatre doors, the building can be used in another way which may appeal to a larger audience, and finally because the theatre cannot sustain itself anymore. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter and I hope that you take the things that I have discussed into account when making your decision. If you would like to discuss this matter any further please feel free to contact me on my email kelly.sinclair@gmail.com or call me on the following number 403-123-4567. I hope to hear your decision soon.

Sincerely,

Kelly Sinclair
