Is There Justice?

In today’s society, we have all seen a fair share of crimes, atrocities and injustices but in America, we see the most flawed and broken justice system ever. America, a free country that is known for it’s opportunity is a prime example of all the injustice and corruption happens in the world today. A good example of this is was a very controversial case of Trayvon Martin, where the murder, George Zimmerman was acquitted for the wrongful death of the teen. There are numerous examples of injustices that happen to victims and ‘criminals’ that are wrongfully incarcerated but there is one case that will get to people and strike them as the most wrong and stupid trial that should have ended in the criminal to be locked up. This case is about a teenager that was drinking and driving and killed four people and handicapped another but he was only given 10 years of probation because he was a rich kid that did not understand the consequences of his actions because he was rich, or otherwise ‘affluenza’.

So what happened that fateful night? 16 year old Ethan Couch, the perpetrator that caused the death of four innocent people went out with friends and stole beer from Wal-Mart and went into a vehicle and hit 4 people on the roadside tending to a broken vehicle. In a Texas court Ethan was given ten years probation by the judge. How did Judge Jean Boyd buy the case of the defence? A mental affliction called affluenza. This ‘condition’ is where a person does not understand the consequences of his or hers actions because they are rich or affluent. Utterly ridiculous. How can a judge sentence a reckless teen that was three times the legal limit of blood alcohol level and let him off because of a make believe mental affliction. To add salt to wounds, he is being taken to a spa like rehab that cost $450000 annually. Instead of sentencing him based on his wealth and status as a rich white teen who does not know better, he should have been sentenced as any other person should have been. Its tragic how money can bypass justice and is more valuable that 4 lives.

Criminals are not usually one to be blamed for their parts in injustices, it is usually the judge or jury or even both of them. George Zimmerman’s case was thought to be a lost cause and he was going to go to jail but the jury found him not guilty. Yes the jury. Out of the whole country, a select few people with the golden chance to put a murder behind bars found him not guilty. To make it even worse one of the jurors commented and said that he got away with it but he is guilty in God’s books. This makes America’s justice system a enormous sham. George’s defence case was a law called “Stand your ground” which allows a potential victim to use lethal force to a criminal when placed under life threatening conditions. For this case it makes no sense at all because George is a large male with a firearm ‘protecting’ himself from a defenceless young black resident of the neighbourhood, Trayvon Martin, who is clearly inferior to the man. George is a free man, Trayvon is dead, wheres the justice, nowhere to be found. The same law of ‘stand your ground’ was brought up when an African American female fired a warning shot to her abusive male partner that was threatening to kill her. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison. A simple warning shot that hurt no one was enough to lock up a innocent woman fearing for her life and her kid’s lives but a grown man that killed an unarmed teenager is free roaming America.

How would you feel if your sons were taken by the police for no reason? That was the case for three black males waiting for the bus to go to play basketball. The police arrested them for obstruction the flow of other pedestrians on the sidewalk. Starting off , since when could you get arrested for that because that is the worst claim ever. There is a designated portion of the sidewalk for people waiting for the bus so other pedestrians have a clear path on the side walk. What makes this even more foolish is that the coach came and told the police that they were students going to play a game but to no avail he was threatened with arrest. How can we people stand for this? Cops are supposed to protect us, and serve justice to criminals, not arrest three innocent teens. Do we need to run a personality check on them now to see if they are racist or just give them a gun, a badge and some handcuffs and let them loose. No, we need to evaluate who we trust our safety with and not just take a gamble. It is unfortunate that even the police are the ones causing injustices too.

Most of all this injustice is mostly because of racism. It may not be evident but it is a huge give away to these stories. Remember the drunk driving teen that killed 4 people and was let off, the same judge sentenced a 14 year old boy to 10 years for unintentional killing a person with a punch. The catch here, he was black. The woman that was sentenced to 20 years for warning her husband to back off was also black. Many more people of different races are being stereotyped and being victimized by prejudice because our society has still not fully detached from the ignorance of racism. Every one should be judge equally not because of their skin colour, their wealth or anything else. The people that are judging these people should be the ones who face justice for their incompetence and their ignorance. Then maybe one day we will see all of this off and true justice will be served to the people who deserve it the most but if we are moving at the pace we are right now, there will be no true justice. So is there justice? No, sadly.

Traveling issues

It was around February 2006 when the rumors in my house began about going to Kenya. I was in the fifth grade back then, going to school, playing with friends and exploring new places in the neighborhood. I had no issues with leaving Calgary and go to a new and hostile area to me . Then came April, the month we were supposed to leave, and just when we were leaving my mom decided to tell me that we were going to move but first we would go to London. The news about moving definitely shocked me because I thought of Africa as what they showed on television. Huts in the middle of the savanna and never ending water hikes. The stereotypes shown on television scared the life out of me but I was assured  that we would live a normal life there. Going to London really got me excited for this trip and it at least soothed my fear of moving, but the flight was my biggest concern. I’m usually scared of  flying, short distances, long distances and so on. The trip would take first take us to London England, and we would stay there for a week. What happened there, at the airport specifically, was something to remember.

The flight was long for sure, it was about twelve hours and it wasn’t eventful at all, minus the motion sickness I experienced during takeoff and lift off. When we arrived at London Heathrow international airport, the airport was as busy as a beehive. People with different destinations they need to be at, going left and right, hauling luggage, making phone calls and overall chaos. When we came out of the airport the cars shocked me, I have never seen a car being driven from the right hand side. As my family pulled each of our luggage, we were greeted by my dad’s cousin and there was a large van and a small two door car. For some reason it was decided that half the luggage would go into the coupe and 3 people would go into the back seat.   Half of the luggage was crammed into the coupe. In the car was me, my older sister and some other random guys that was taking us to the house we were going to stay at. The car ride was appalling. The heaviest of the luggage was pushing down on me and ant the same time I was crammed between my sister and some random guy I’ve never seen. The heat of the car and the smell was horrible. Everyone next to me were sweating making it even worse. I thought my fragile framed body was going to be crushed by the pressure being excreted on me. What made it even worse was the fact that the driver didn’t even know where he was going and he even got lost once. Lost in a huge city and crammed into a coupe angered me and this was what this trip was becoming so far and after about an hour we came to the house. That ordeal was over and the next ‘big’ thing that happened there would be most memorable thing that happened to me was just before we left.

It was when we were to leave London and go to Kenya. My dad suggested that we go to the airport at least 5 hours before the flight and it was in the morning around 10 am. We came into the airport around 5 am, everyone in my family was very tired. I thought the airport was closed because I saw no one there. It was empty and the silence was deafening . My older brother decided to stray of in the terminal and he found the first class waiting area. Everyone else found empty seats and they all passed out but me on the other hand I couldn’t. I wanted to explore the airport and see what I could do there but there was really nothing to do there so I would just loop around the whole terminal bored out of my mind. During one of my loops around the terminal I saw two heavily armed London police officers with guns pointed at my brother and telling him to walk then they came up to me and asked if I was his brother. I was really short then and these men were just towers compared to me and that made me feel even smaller. Their guns were probably the size of me and that just contributed to my fear of these men that approached me. I was blank and my muscles tensed up and for the first time in my life I was sweating and I had no idea what to do. I squeaked out a yes and they took me along with my brother to my mom and dad. When we came to my family, I thought my mom fainted, her face was dead and in pure shock. My dad just put on his disappointed face on. The officers then just told that my brother sleeping in the exclusive first class section. The whole misunderstanding was pretty funny and crazy in the fact I thought my brother did some crazy thing that would alarm the police and spark some airport lockdown and all the flights would be grounded but he was just sleeping in the wrong place. Everything after that everything went smooth then we went to Kenya where my life would change and get interesting.

September 30

Trying to escape a rough life.

In present day America, drugs, gangs, murder and all sorts of shunned activities plague almost every major city of the country. One of these neighborhoods, South Chicago was particularly known for all these bad things and living in the center of it was Trey, a 18 year old boy. Trey had higher aspirations to get out of the hood and live a better life for him and his mother. Just at the mere age of 2 his father abandoned his family leaving the family to fend for themselves. Trey did have an older brother that was 5 years older than him, but he was caught in a cross fire  of a gang shooting when he was 10. Just Trey and his mother were left in the family and she was left to work 2 jobs to provide for him. As time went by, America’s economy collapsed and she was left jobless. With a crumbling economy and no money, Trey started pushing drugs when he was 16  and it became a life Trey would certainly regret. Just 2 months into selling crack cocaine, Trey was caught and spent 2 years in a juvenile detention center.   In there he contemplated about his life and where it would head and from there he vowed that he would get his mother and himself out the hood one way or another.

Fresh out from the detention center, Trey’s best friend, Keith, was there to pick him up. Leaning on his rickety 89′ Honda, they both came up to each other and they did their signature hand shake. “C’mon hop in the car man, you missed a lot while you were locked up in that little boy house, you gotta come to taco bell now, they got some new taco’s you will love,” yelled Keith. “Not right now, you got to take me up to my mom’s house, haven’t seen her in a long time since she last visited me,”. Trey threw his stuff into the back seat of the car and he got into the passenger set. The car was in really bad shape, rust on the outside, the rims were just as rusty as the car itself, inside smelt like an old abandoned house and the seats were slashed and had tape to hold the cuts together. “What the hell  happened to your car, it was normal before I went in. Man this car needs a miracle to to get fixed,”. “Stop cussing my car, she went through struggles and at least it still runs, otherwise you’d be taking the whack transit out of here,”.

They pull up to Trey’s house and they both get out of the car. Trey’s mom comes out in a modestly long bath robe tied up and with hair curlers on. “Trey! get over here you lanky son of a-,”. ” Ma, calm down,”. She goes up to him and embraces her son. “Whats good miss.C,  I brought your boy back so I’m going to head out back to my house,” exclaimed Keith. Trey and his mother walked back to the house and she went straight for the stove. She started cooking up his favorite food, pasta and sauce with meatballs in them. “So how’s the block now Ma, anything new going on?”. “Nothing new really, same old bull that goes on in these streets.Grown men fighting each other killing themselves and selling drugs. Girls are worse though, they go for these ignorant fools that just might get them killed. Damn shame what world we live in boy,”. “Uh well that’s a lot to take in Ma, say do you know how I could go back to school, you know, community collage or something? I ain’t going to act a fool no more and push these drugs around the street’s no more,”. “I don’t know, you go look down the block, they got a new little place you could sign up for just down the block. Why the hell do you even want to go to school anyway? You just going to end up in jail again or even six feet under for all I know,”. ” Whats gotten in to you Ma, you sound like a goof for all I know, now can I have some food and I’ll be on my way out,”. “Whatever here you go,”. She slides the plate of food down the table to Trey and he gets it right before it could slide off the table.

As he eats he picks up a phone to call Keith to pick him up. Keith tells him he will come right after he does something. Trey steps outside and waits for Kieth to come and he pulls up. “get in the car man! Quick times!,”as he yells frantically. Trey runs in and he can see all the perspiration on Kieth’s forehead. He asks whats wrong and Kieth simply tells him has happened. He tells him that he just stabbed a gang member and that their after him. Trey, confused tells him to stop and drop him off near the community collage just a few blocks ahead. Trey runs out the car and at his quickest pace, he runs to the school. He barges in the door and stops to catch his breath. The lady at the front office asks him if he’s alright. He tells her that he was just running from a potentially chase that could have occurred but he at least escaped. From there he enrolled in the collage and tells the school about how he at least finished high school in the prison with fair marks. He went enrolled into a business degree and was excited about finally helping out his mom. As he steps outside a van was awaiting his exit from the school, 6 large individuals all  wearing similar colored clothing were waiting for him outside and they said they saw him go into the school and waited for him for 2 hours as he was inside enrolling into the school. Insisting that he tell them where Kieth headed,Trey said no and told them to go away as he wanted no part of this.  After some warnings and cusses were exchanged and after that one of the gang members pulled a gun and shot Trey 4 times. They all ran away while Trey collapsed on the ground. Looking up to the sky which was getting darker, Trey thought about how in just one day he ended up here laying on the ground and dying. Life was fading from this lost boy who just wanted to escape a life dominated by what just got him killed, gang violence. Trey died in hospital an hour later and by his side was just his mother silent and telling the covered up body, “Why, why me? I lost everything,”.

I just the way life is and sometimes you can escape the way you living in.
