Persuasive: Zero Tolerance Policy

Thank you Prosper School Board for allowing me to express my opinion regarding the zero tolerance policy. My name is Kelly Smith and I am a grade 12 student attending Prosper High School. I am here to discuss the need to accept the zero tolerance policy which will make our school safer, and will bring bullies to justice. The zero tolerance policy will suspend or expel any student who discriminates or harass others. This will in return make our school a better and safer environment. All students should have the right with dignity, respect and fairness by others. Furthermore this will hold bullies against their actions due to the fact that they will need an explanation for their misbehaviour as well as they will be informed of the consequences of their negative actions.

Individuals who are against this proposal say that suspension or expulsion is too harsh for unnecessary situations such as name calling. What they don’t realize is that when push turns to shove which can lead to injury and effect the safety of the students in the school. The zero tolerance policy will ensure that small actions such as name calling don’t lead to bigger fights. The safety of students is the number one priority. The Prosper Student’s Association is afraid that adopting the zero tolerance policy will leave teachers in a sticky situation because, a joke for some students may not be a joke for another. It will not be a nightmare for teachers to differentiate between a joke and harassment because there is a fine line between the two. Furthermore another benefit is that this policy will time efficient because it will reduce the time spent by staff dealing with small everyday problems for instance name calling since no such problems will arise. What the Student’s Association fails to understand is that the biggest threat the school is facing is bullying.

Students say that they would feel more safe if the zero tolerance policy was accepted. How do you expect students to learn in an environment where they feel threatened. Students feel that bullies should be suspended and expelled because no one has the right to insult, mistreat, and hurt anyone. Bullies prey on others because they know that nothing is going to be done against them. They taunt their victims after harassing them. Implementing this policy will send them a loud and clear message.

In considering what I have said today, I hope that the proposal for adopting the zero tolerance policy into the student code of conduct is accepted. It will make Prosper High School a safer environment for students that will in return help students learn better. It will also send bullies a loud and clear message that harassment is not welcomed at Prosper High School.

My Rant on Graduation Night

If I was given the honor of speaking at my graduation about my life this would be my rant.

Oooooo man! Never thought I would have the opportunity to do such a thing. Standing here. On the stage. In my grad gown. Standing in front of you all. First of all, for those of you who don’t know me, I’m surprised, but Hi my name is Zaha!

Before I start talking about anything I would like to quote my one and only, Drake, “ Starting from the bottom now we here….” Who ever thought that we would actually make it here. Because honestly I would have never thought that I would be here. I didn’t even think I would get past middle school. But I’m glad I did.

I came to this school in grade 5. The beginning of middle school was rough. But honestly middle school is never easy, and it made me who I am today. Everyone that I met is incredible in some way, but there are on some people that I really connected with. Honestly, there are some people that I just wish I got more of a chance to get to know. But I feel like I’m not the only one who feels like this. Then high school came along. This is a topic that I can talk forever about but I won’t. I will just talk about the main things. DRAMA. DRAMA. DRAMA. I think that’s it. Just kidding. Yea some things happened in middle school, some things happened in high school and are still occurring. But does it all really matter. I don’t really think I’m going to remember the bad things, just the good things. For me its the good times that I will remember. The bad stays where it should be, in its place, in the past. Where it started is where it ended.

One of my friends ended up leaving the school last year. I only got to know her for a year, but we made some great memories together. I still stay in contact with her and whenever we talk it feels like we’ve known each other forever. Together we reminisce on the good times that we had together, with all of our friends. I miss her yes, but I  know that she is happy where ever she is.

High school is where i made majority of my incredible memories and this where I found my TRUE friends. ALLOW ME TO EMPHASIZE THE WORD TRUE. People that I can go to for help. The friends that I can tell anything and know that they won’t open their mouth. The people who can rely on me and I can rely on them. People who can be myself around and not be afraid to be judged. Those people I found in high school and are all my really good friends.  You all know who you are. Thank you!

In the beginning I never thought that high school would be like the movie series high school musical. But in some ways it was. I think everyone can agree with that. However it wasn’t as exaggerated.

I would like to thank all of you for many things. This is where the list begins. Thank you for being who you are. Thank you for accepting one another. Thank you for accepting me. Thank you for not being fake to my face. Thank you for being some what honest. Thank you for your help. Thank you for standing up for what you believe in. Thank you to all of the teachers you all made learning a lot easier, especially by using Quizlet Live. Learning became a game. Thank you.

We all are incredibly talented people, and different too. I personally hope to stay in contact with you all in the future. I am hopeful to see us all successful, and I wonder where time will take us all.

The Technological Takeover

I go to the movies, before the movies begin I see everyone on their phones. You are on a piece of technology while you are waiting for another one to begin. It is the switch over from one to another. Hello and thank you for coming. I am a grade twelve student here to issue the overdependence on our technology today.

Let my start off with simple questions. Raise you hand if you own any sort of technology could be a computer, an IPad or IPod or even a cell phone? I can see that almost everyone in the crowd has raised their hands up. Okay now who owns a smart phone? There again we see almost everyone with a hand up. From this we can see that technology is taking over the world like an epidemic. I found this article online and it has really impacted me, the ideas that this writer portrays very much summarized why I am here today. I am here today to show you all how technology has taken a sweep over the nation.

In the article, “Something You Love More Than Your Mama” by Harry Augustus, tell us the problem of the over consumption of technology use. He informs us about how there is a National Texting competition. A texting competition, technology has enveloped us so much as we now create worldwide contests based around it. He talks about how classrooms, dining rooms and even the washrooms have now become a place where you can check your phone. We check our phones every single time just to see if we get a text message or a phone call. There right there, you just check your phone right now. And you. See what the world has come to? We use our phones when situations are awkward or when we are just simply bored. I agree with Harry that phones we have now come to love more than our mothers.

I want to show you all this video. Plays video. Now what do you see? I see people using there phone during unnecessary moments. Why would you want to watch a concert through your small phone screen when you can just watch them right there in front of you. This video is one of the many examples showing us the reality of technology. In other words what this clip means is that in today’s society special moments that we should be cherishing, instead we cherish them but through the screen of our phones.

When I was on Harry’s article I found a statistic. Over an hour, it says that 58% of smart phone users do not go over an hour without checking their phones. That is a majority of the world. If this statistic keeps on rising then that will have a negative impact on the world, causing there to rarely ever be any real face-to-face interactions.

Plus the worst group of people that are getting affected by this rapid change and development of technology are the children. The children are growing up addicted to the technology. I got my first phone when I was in grade 8 and it was not the greatest one ever now in today’s world I see elementary school children that have IPhones. Last week I went to go visit my baby cousin, he is barely able to talk or walk but yet knows how to operate an IPad. That is an issue.

When we lose a piece of our technology we as humans seem to go in this panic mode then begin to search for it. From a comic that I have found it shows a man who has lost his GPS, it shows us the irony of how the man lost his GPS when the function of the GPS is suppose to get you to your destination when you are lost. Technology has become so empowering on our society that once we have misplace any piece of it we automatically begin to search for it. What if your mom got lost? How would you come to contact with her? By your cell phone. Technology has created humans to lose their senses and interaction skills.

The opposition would state that technology has brought in many new medical improvements. Yes, that is great but staring at a pixilated screen all day can really harm our health therefore technology has caused more problematic situations rather than fixing them. It has caused more deaths due to texting and driving, since this is the case there has to be a law implemented now for people who are texting and driving.

Can you not see the abundance of problems that the technology is causing to hurt our world?

Thank you!

aurora theatre

I’d like to start off by introducing myself as Kerry Sinclair a former graduate of Prosper High School. I am here today to discuss a issue very close  and dear to my heart and soul. The closure of the movie theatre. It may sound silly now but please just hear me out. Let me explain to you why this issue has broken many hearts and saddened many faces. Let me tell you why this news has horrified us in every way possible and left us heartbroken.

I love movies. Wonderful movies. Ever since I was a kid I have to been going to Aurora Theatre to watch films. For me it has become sort of a favorite pastime and a few months ago my grandma brought upon me the fact that the town council was going to permantely close it. How could anyone do such a horrifying thing? How could someone close a place that comes along with so many different memories for so many different people? Every day I drive past the movie theatre, while going to work and when I look up at it so many memories rush back to me. I remember all the times I would come here to get away from everything going on at home and when I was only seven I used to hold my grandpas finger and we used to sit and watch three sometimes four movies in a row. It’s the only memory I have doing anything with my late grandpa. How heartbreaking would it be for the symbol of my only memories to fade away forever and ever?

However, the Aurora theatre isn’t only important to me but to many other people living in this town. Our little town doesn’t really provide many options to go to hangout with friends or family. So we should all consider the little teenagers and families who consider the movie theatre as a another home. Those people who come here to relax, enjoy and have fun. For some people it’s the only place and chance they have to have some real fun and entertainment  and the only place they can actually hang around and do what they want. In today’s society, as we all know, if kids, especially teenagers, get bored and have nothing to do they usually resort to the wrong thing such as drugs and violence. If the movie theatre remains open , at least the poor kids will have something to keep them entertained in the positive way and they won’t go down the wrong path. There’s only a couple of places  kids can go like the coffee house or the fitness guru health center and I’m certain kids of today will not even want to step in those places. Life is all about fun and for us movies is a big part of that. Now how cruel would it be to take away something that means so much to everyone? Think about the kids if not anyone else. Their future relies on this decision.

Aurora theatre doesn’t just have to be a place where movies are shown. We can absolutely take advantage of it and  use it for multiple purposes. Just the other day I saw an ad on the online newspaper about  The Prospero Players wanting a new performance space for their show Grease. Well, why not the movie theatre for crying out loud? We have plenty of extra space and it’s more convenient then the high school gym. Let’s leave the gym to the kids, shall we? Another plus of having Grease in the movie theatre is that it will double up the money the theatre makes. For example, when folks come into watch a movie they’ll see there’s a play going on a they’ll be attracted towards it. They’ll buy the ticket for the play and then go onto watch the movie which they have already purchased a ticket for. I’m sure I would.  A high school gym which is supposed to be used for the students is not a place for a play. A theatre is.

All in all, the Aurora theatre is a place deeply connected with most people in town and it would be absolutely disheartening if it closed. If the Aurora theatre closes, along with it will go our amazing, treasured memories and our piece of mind. Please think about the innocent children and adults who have such a deep link with such a tremendous place, a place that will be forever in our hearts. Think about the children at least!

Aurora Theatre

Hello I am Kerry Sinclair I have just graduated from Prosper High School and I have been brought to the knowledge that the town council want to close Aurora Theatre, the town’s only movie Theatre. In my recent studies I have come to a conclusion that we should not keep Aurora Theatre because of many reasons including the cost of running the building relationship to sales and the evolution of the internet.

As Stated a study done on Aurora Theatre in September of 2011 ticket Sales Only cover a little over half of what it takes to cost to run the place of business. And when a place of business is not bringing in enough money to cover the expenses no matter what business it is whether it be a grocery store or a hot dog stand it will not survive long under those conditions. Another thing I Pulled out of that study is why are the sales so low its probably because of the falling popularity of the Movie Theatre in general. If no one wants to go why keep it open. In the Long run the place of business is just losing money.

The internet today is growing at a fast rate and popularity of online is going up not just with young people but old. When you can pay a fee online of less than a movie ticket per month and watch all the movies u want just for that small fee. Services like these are becoming more popular on the internet pulling people out of the movie theatre and in to their cozy home to watch the same movie. As stated my internet user redtech123 “i just bought a new eSlate- why would i pay $$ for a ticket to a movie i can download for free” this user is probably seen many movies online and pay close to nothing for it. In a article posted by hittt.com shows that high speed internet is on the way for the town Prosper by the end of the year which will provide more opportunities for people to view movies in their own house and a faster speeds so they can watch the movies faster with little wait time.

With the growing of the internet today and the Cost to run the theatre is a very good reason to close the Aurora Theatre. Thank You very much for your time and I hope you consider my and  many other peoples opinion of the Aurora Theatre.
