Persuasive: Zero Tolerance Policy
Thank you Prosper School Board for allowing me to express my opinion regarding the zero tolerance policy. My name is Kelly Smith and I am a grade 12 student attending Prosper High School. I am here to discuss the need to accept the zero tolerance policy which will make our school safer, and will bring bullies to justice. The zero tolerance policy will suspend or expel any student who discriminates or harass others. This will in return make our school a better and safer environment. All students should have the right with dignity, respect and fairness by others. Furthermore this will hold bullies against their actions due to the fact that they will need an explanation for their misbehaviour as well as they will be informed of the consequences of their negative actions.
Individuals who are against this proposal say that suspension or expulsion is too harsh for unnecessary situations such as name calling. What they don’t realize is that when push turns to shove which can lead to injury and effect the safety of the students in the school. The zero tolerance policy will ensure that small actions such as name calling don’t lead to bigger fights. The safety of students is the number one priority. The Prosper Student’s Association is afraid that adopting the zero tolerance policy will leave teachers in a sticky situation because, a joke for some students may not be a joke for another. It will not be a nightmare for teachers to differentiate between a joke and harassment because there is a fine line between the two. Furthermore another benefit is that this policy will time efficient because it will reduce the time spent by staff dealing with small everyday problems for instance name calling since no such problems will arise. What the Student’s Association fails to understand is that the biggest threat the school is facing is bullying.
Students say that they would feel more safe if the zero tolerance policy was accepted. How do you expect students to learn in an environment where they feel threatened. Students feel that bullies should be suspended and expelled because no one has the right to insult, mistreat, and hurt anyone. Bullies prey on others because they know that nothing is going to be done against them. They taunt their victims after harassing them. Implementing this policy will send them a loud and clear message.
In considering what I have said today, I hope that the proposal for adopting the zero tolerance policy into the student code of conduct is accepted. It will make Prosper High School a safer environment for students that will in return help students learn better. It will also send bullies a loud and clear message that harassment is not welcomed at Prosper High School.
